Nintendo Switch 2 Set for 2025 Release: Bigger, Better, and Backward Compatible

Nintendo Switch 2 Set for 2025 Release: Bigger, Better, and Backward Compatible

Nintendo announced on Thursday that its highly anticipated Switch 2 hybrid console will launch later this year, featuring a larger screen and redesigned controllers. The company unveiled the Switch 2 in a trailer, starting with the current model before showing the “joy-con” controllers detaching to expand the tablet, with the joy cons growing in size and adopting a matte black finish.

The new joy-con covers, available in red and light blue, are magnetically attachable when removed, allowing for flexible use when the console is docked or propped up on its upgraded U-shaped kickstand. This new kickstand allows the console to lie almost flat on a surface. The design closely mirrors previously leaked mock-ups, and while no specific release date was given, Nintendo confirmed more details would be shared during its next “Nintendo Direct” event on April 2. Additionally, the Switch 2 will be backward compatible, letting users play their old Switch games on the new model.
