Attention, World of Warcraft fans: WoW Insider is reporting that Wrath of the Lich King, the next WoW expansion, is no longer in alpha and will soon be entering beta. This means that those selected from the pool of entries for beta access should soon be getting their invites.

Blizzard has a website set up that contains information for those of you who get beta keys, like how to create a Blizzard account and access client files needed to play.

Remember, there are quite a few beta scams out there, so make sure you're careful with where you disclose your account information.

E3 2008: Knights of the Old Republic MMO Confirmed

It's been rumored for years, but it looks like a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic MMO is finally on its way.

The news comes from Joystiq, who reports that Portfolio.com has published an excerpt from their interview with EA CEO John Riccitiello, who says that one of EA's two MMOs in development is "in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare," sparking excitement that the game could be a KOTOR MMO as Bioware was behind the first KOTOR game.

Joystiq then contacted N. Evan Van Zelfden, who wrote the report, who confirmed to them that the game in question is indeed an online KOTOR. Sounds good!

Age of Conan Racks Up 400k In Sales

Thanks to a fierce marketing campaign as well as years of positive showings at E3, Age of Conan has made quite a splash in the PC community since its release last week, having sold 400k units according to GameDaily. This makes the game one of the fastest-selling PC games in history, which becomes even more impressive when you consider that it's an MMO.

It's encouraging for MMO developers to see another MMO besides WoW doing well. If Age of Conan can build momentum and continue to gain subscribers, it could send the message that you don't have to be able to take on WoW to be successful.

While it's unlikely that anyone can challenge Blizzard for control of the MMO market right now (well, maybe if you have a billion dollars), successful releases of future MMOs such as Warhammer Online as well as the continued success of Age of Conan could start to slowly erode Blizzard's subscriber base.

For now, it'll be interesting to see how Age of Conan performs in the coming weeks.

Firefly MMORPG Coming

I swear, Joss Whedon's creation "Firefly" has to have one of the most unique franchise histories on Earth.

It started as a Fox TV show that was canceled after 11 episodes, found a huge fanbase with the DVD release, was made into a movie last year (Serenity), and might finally be ending up as a MMO video game to be made by Multiverse.

According to Wired News, who has the exclusive on this:

The online version will move away from those central characters -- after all, there's only one Mal Reynolds. In an MMORPG, "everybody has to have their own story," says Multiverse co-founder and executive producer Corey Bridges.

"Television series can be really good properties to turn into MMOs, because when you make a TV series, not only do you need great characters, but you need to create a full, rich, compelling place," Bridges says. "If you're doing science fiction, you have to really think it out and create an incredibly rich environment that is compelling in its own right, and worth exploring and going back to week after week. That's what Joss Whedon did with Firefly."

Check out the article for full details. I've never gotten into a MMO game, but I'm a huge Firefly fan so I might at least check it out; especially if it ends up being free like the rest of Multiverse (probably wont happen).

Atlus has announced that it has shipped two of its titles to North American retailers today. The first, Battle B-Daman, is based on the anime of the same name, which will see the launching of its second season on American television in 2006. The game was developed exclusively for the GameBoy Advance, is rated E, and will be followed by Battle B-Daman: Fire Spirits! on September 26.

Yamato Delgado dreams of playing B-Daman, the ancient sport of the B-DaWorld—and his dream comes true when he's chosen to wield Cobalt Blade, the most powerful B-Daman ever. Yamato must use Cobalt Blade to compete in B-Daman tournaments and defeat the evil B-Daplayers of the Shadow Alliance, who will stop at nothing to take over the B-DaWorld. Yamato will also meet characters both familiar and unknown on his journeys, including the warm-hearted Alan and the sinister-looking Goblin. Only a few have what it takes to become a B-Daplayer; will Yamato become the B-Dachampion?

The second Atlus title to ship to North American retailers today is Summon Night: Swordcraft Story for the GameBoy Advance, marking the first game in the popular RPG franchise to see a stateside release. The title was developed by Banpresto and will be followed by Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 2 on October 3.

Welcome to the strange world of Lyndbaum: a sacred land linked to four magical dimensions, from which summoners can call forth spirits called Guardian Beasts to do their bidding. Wystern is one of Lyndbaum's largest cities, often called the City of Swords because of its large population of Craftknights, who use the strength of Guardian Beasts to forge powerful weapons.

A great tournament has begun in Wystern, a series of battles that will determine the next of Wystern's seven Craftlords, who act as the city's guardians and councillors. But the tournament features an unusual rule that has everyone in Wystern abuzz: only Craftknight apprentices under the age of 18 are allowed to enter.

One of the tournament's contestants is the child of Shintetsu, a legendary Craftlord who met a mysterious fate three years earlier. The child wants nothing more than to win the tournament and uphold Shintetsu's legacy—but the tournament is only the beginning of a saga that will lead to the uncovering of Wystern's darkest secret...
