THQ Puts Big Huge Games Up For Sale

Crispy Gamer has received word from THQ that the publisher is putting Big Huge Games, responsible for the Rise of Nations series, up for the sale, and that the studio will be closed if a buyer is not found.

Also, two other studios, Heavy Iron Studios and Incinerator, will become independent companies as a result of THQ's latest moves to cut workforce and reduce financial losses.

THQ, who acquired Big Huge last year, released this statement:

“As part of THQ’s previously announced business realignment and related headcount reduction plans that targeted cost reductions of $220 million, including a reduction in workforce of 600 people worldwide, THQ today notified the staff at two of its development studios that they will be spun out as independent companies: Heavy Iron in Los Angeles, CA, and Incinerator in Carlsbad, CA. In addition, THQ informed the staff at its Big Huge Games studio in Timonium, MD, that it plans to close the studio if a sale is not completed in the near future. These actions were unfortunate but were necessitated by the difficult economic environment.”

Big Huge, who also developed the popular XBLA title Catan as well as an expansion for Age of Empires III, has two unnamed titles, one for the Wii and another for the 360, PS3, and PC, in development. They have a good track record with their RTS games, so hopefully THQ won't have much trouble finding someone to sell them to.

The game doesn't mess with its own formula of success but rather, it focuses on what it does best -- delivering an intense, visceral, adrenaline-pumping experience. The sinister violence and gore is a trademark of this game that has been well received by fans and one that Epic doesn't shy away from. Although it fails to revolutionize the genre, Gears 2 delivers on all fronts and surpasses the original with more weapons, deadlier monsters, larger campaigns, more multiplayer maps and an incredibly addictive Horde mode. Gears of War 2 is this year's game to own on the Xbox 360.

Click here for an explanation of our review and scoring format.

Gears of War was quite the blockbuster when it first arrived on Xbox 360. The game offered solid controls, great visuals, intuitive third person camera and chainsaws. Though the plot wasn't the main focus, Gears effectively brought us the memorable, wisecracking Delta squad members: Marcus, Dom, Cole and Baird. Fast forward to Gears 2 -- the game takes everything that made the original Gears a solid shooter and takes it a step further on the epic scale. To quote Epic Lead Designer, Cliff Bleszinski, Gears of War 2 is definitely "bigger, better and more badass."

Gears 2 continue right after the original shooter; following General RAAM's defeat and the light mass bombing. Marcus and Dom fight with fellow COG soldiers fatally wounded defending the city after subsequent Locust attacks. It is there on the hospital grounds we meet the rook, Benjamin, brother to his sibling Carmine who died from an infamous sniper shot and Tai, a militaristic but calm leader. They quickly learn that the Locusts have quietly regrouped underground and have launched attacks in endless numbers. Entire cities have been sunk underground as the Horde employs powerful forces and tactical equipment and that's not all; they've brought grotesque and far deadlier creatures this time around. Epic has placed a strong emphasis on the story behind the war that sheds light on Marcus Fenix's history and Dom's continued search for his missing wife, Maria.

As expected, the returning weapons are the Lancer, Sniper Rifle, Shotgun, Torque Bow, Pistol and the Hammer of Dawn. New weapons added to your arsenal include the Hammerburst Rifle (enemy weapon), Gorgon Pistol, Ink Grenade (emits poison), Mortar (distance artillery weapon), Mulcher (turret gun) and the fan-favorite, the Scorcher Flamethrower. Grenades can be stuck to walls and used as proximity mines to destroy enemies lurking around. If you are pinned in battle, you can crawl while bleeding to try to reach your teammates to be revived. The new weapons are available in the latter half of the game and can be found by looting Locust corpses. Each weapon is distinct and allows you to perform unique executions on fallen enemies crawling away. You can also grab a dying Locust for use as a meat shield to flank your enemies. Be warned that using the corpse for cover lasts for a very short time -- limiting you to the use of a pistol. The shield will either explode into bits under heavy gunfire or be disposed of after breaking the Locust's neck.

The original Gears saw players destroying their opponents with a chainsaw attack; granting them temporary invulnerability to gunfire or melee attacks. Pulling the attack off was often based on luck between two players with the one who revved up his chainsaw just a split second earlier winning the fight; which was infuriating. Epic has addressed the Chainsaw attack complaints with a new Chainsaw duel feature. Two players that rush one another with the Lancer will be thrown into a mini-game; quickly mashing the B button ensures victory. If a third player approaches two people engaged in a Chainsaw duel, the poor guy or gal on the receiving end will instantly be overpowered.

Both single player and coop campaigns allow you to finish the game by yourself or with a friend. The option to play at your own pace is simplified as campaigns can be played with two separate difficulty settings. An extra difficulty setting Normal can be selected with the Insane difficulty unlocked after the game has been completed. You can invite your friends with the "What's Up" feature that lets you see the status and progress of your Gears' friends online. Personally, I found the friendly menu list to be useful in keeping tabs with other online players.

The all new Horde mode is one of the highlights of Gears 2. In Horde mode, you join a team of five players collaborating to destroy Locusts waves on various maps. Eventually, your enemies grow stronger with more health, better weapons and increased numbers. A total of 50 waves are featured in Horde mode for which the difficulty level rises considerably after the tenth wave. Fighting together in groups, reviving teammates, giving cover fire and using key vantage points is crucial for your survival. Linked achievements play a big role in the Horde and multiplayer modes. Gears fans will be happy to hear that specific achievements (completed from the original) unlock new playable characters such as Anthony Carmine, Minh Young Kim (former Delta squad leader) and General RAAM. Your progress ultimately dictates your rank; which is used for matchmaking purposes. Horde mode is tough as nails but is easily the most satisfying and rewarding to play with everyone.

A War Journal is a handy tool that tracks your listed achievements, unlocked characters, and collectables. Rather than using COG tags, Epic has placed hidden files, newspapers, memos and personal letters throughout the game. They comprise a total of 41 collectables that provides a side story to the events surrounding the war. A magnifying glass signifies the item is found and is easily picked up by pressing the X button. You don't need to guess how close you are to an achievement as the journal displays your progress towards obtaining it. This is a welcome change for fans wishing to complete the game in its entirety.

Multiplayer modes feature seven maps: Warzone, Execution, Annex, King of the Hill, Guardian, Submission and Wingman. Epic's gift to its fans is a code for the Flashback Map Pack for those with preorders and for those buying Gears 2 at launch. This map pack includes five maps: Subway, Canals, Tyro Station, Gridlock and Mansion. While it doesn't sound like much, each map is considerably different from the original Gears. The Subway is less dreary, Canals have been hit by a frozen icy spell, Tyro Station is more industrialized, Gridlock is filled with foliage and the Mansion has better lighting. A new Training Ground mode gives casual, novice and veteran players a brief tutorial on the basics of multiplayer controls and combat.

Gears 2 is a graphically intense game. Buildings, air-borne dust, the underground caverns and the city landscapes are very polished. Special effects ranging from hailing fire on your enemies with the Mortar to poisoning the enemy with Ink grenades are visually gratifying. The frame rate takes a severe hit at numerous checkpoint locations that could have used some tweaking. There is also a tendency for Locust corpses and weapon spoils to fall and to defy natural physics in its environment. Otherwise, Gears 2 is a game detailed to the core that manages to exceed the best visuals of the original Gears. With respect to audio, the soundtrack is top-notch and a great accompaniment.

Many of the flaws from the original Gears have sadly crept into Gears 2. The A.I. teammates tend to block your shots, run straight into enemy territory without cover, and get hopelessly pinned in a far corner amongst a group of Locusts. Regrettably, the vehicle stages are the most irritating part of many campaigns; especially on the higher difficulty settings. Despite its shortcomings, Gears 2 is an exciting game full of blood, action and suspense for anyone that enjoys a solid third person shooter.

GB Review: Plushees (DS)

Plushees: cute but deadly... fun?

A simple glance at the cute-yet-frightening boxart of
Plushees for the Nintendo DS and you might be tempted to group it with the
multitude of low quality kids' games that have suffocated Nintendo handhelds
for years. However, despite its appearance as a stuffed animal themed minigame
collection, it manages to overturn poor expectations with simple and light
goal-oriented gameplay. Plushees, despite its inadvertently unsettling
exterior, is actually a solid choice for the right age group and may very well captivate
budding gamers of the eight-and-below set.

Click here for an explanation of our review and scoring format.

Plushees' premise is simple: through the power of
imagination or dark magic, stuffed animals have come alive and are naturally in
need of love and companionship that only you can provide. To do this you must
purchase plushees carnival-style with tickets earned from the game's two main
modes, Arcade and Plushee Play. It will take a
lot of play, as the 25 plushees you can purchase in the Plushee Store cost
anywhere between 200 and 1000 tickets and run the gamut from monkeys to
dragons.

Arcade mode consists of
four games, Alley Ball, Ka-Plinko, Pop-A-Loon, and Whack'a Troll. These
easy-to-understand pick up and play games are generally accessible to anyone
and will be effortlessly consumed by the younger crowd due to their
uncomplicated stylus control. Kids should have no trouble flicking the ball for
points in Alley Ball, placing the disc to drop through the pins in Ka-Plinko,
or tapping the screen with the stylus to pop balloons in Pop-a-Loon or fend off
Shrek look-alikes in Whack'a Troll. Though none of these games complex, you
will earn a couple dozen tickets or so in each session so even in short bursts
you get a sense of progress and accomplishment towards buying new plushees.

Once you earn the plushee of your dreams you can use it in
the game's other major mode, Plushee Play. Plushee Play
includes four games: Simon Says, Jump Rope, Hide-n-Seek, and Butterfly Catch.
Simon Says is like the memorization game of its namesake, only in this
iteration you select which plushee acted out the correct command that either you
or the computer selected. In Jump Rope you can make your plushee hop in time in
two ways, either by tapping it in time or by drawing prompted patterns on the
touchscreen, the latter of which is more frantic and fun. Hide-n-Seek might be
more accurately likened to a game of tag and features your plushee as it runs
around trying to hug other plushees by choosing the correct icon of the other
plushee on the touch screen. Butterfly Catch is somewhat broken, as it is very
difficult to perceive the depth of the butterflies your plushee is chasing
around the screen; luckily, the game is lenient and you don't have to be too
close to catch them. You earn points instead of tickets in this mode, but
earned points can be converted into tickets, so these games still have
incentive to be played. While the games in Plushee Play are a bit deeper than
the arcade games, the arcade games still have a simple, general appeal that
these lack.

Plushees' presentation is adequately cute. The stuffed
animal cast isn't overly sweet, but certainly sport a classic soft, rotund
look. When the game uses 3D environments, such as the one used in Hide-n-Seek,
it's very simplistic but adequate. Special mention must be made of the techno
track in the music selections: this trance-like tune is catchy but seems
hilariously out of place given the game's context. The game also features a
multiplayer option should you find another player with a Plushees game card.

Of course, given that Plushees is about earning stuffed
animals and playing games with them, it certainly won't be appropriate for an
older child who has already been introduced to a franchise like Pokemon. While
some of the games are generally fun and somewhat addictive, such as Alley Ball
or Ka-Plinko, the subject matter of the other modes might only be appropriate
for children age eight or younger. But, given the straightforward goal-based
nature of the game, Plushees still manages to stand out in a kids' market
overcrowded with licensed games of questionable quality - and at only $20,
Plushees is even easier to recommend to parents confused by the overwhelming
mediocre choices available to young gamers.

Below are a few excerpts from their preview.

The build on display seemed close to finished with the full world realized and missions in-place. Another big aspect of this franchise is traversing whichever city it’s
set in. This time it’s a return to Rockstar’s homage to New York,
Liberty City. It’s an absolutely massive environment—a network of
boroughs attached by a series of waterways.

Carjacking has been made a little more involved this time. If you try
to take an empty ride Niko will put his elbow through the driver’s side
window and hop in. Once inside the car, you work the right trigger
attempting to hotwire it.

We won't paste the entire preview, but head over to GameTrailers website to get the full thing.

Video footage of a recent interview of Ted Price and Colin Munson of Insomniac Games regarding Resistance 2 (dated for 2008), the sequel to the best (or second best, depending on your love for Call of Duty 4) shooter on the PlayStation 3, has hit the Web.

Hit the jump to view all three of them, but keep in mind that the quality level is a little low.

The game is said to feature:

A huge co-op component featuring eight player story-driven campaigns
over PSN (two player local) alongside single-player campaigns.

Sixty player competitive modes with a focus on squad-versus-squad combat set in huge United States landscapes.

New enemies including Chameleon and Stalker with total cloaking ability

Multiplayer class system. Three basic templates - tank with heavy
weaponry, special ops for distance (bullseye modified with zoom) and
medic.

Online matching - standard difficulty discarded for scaled challenges for team skill.

Partially randomised geometry making levels different with each play through.

Insomniac have been listening to players complaints about the first
game and are also further tapping the power of the PS3 to give more
enemies onscreen and improved AI. They are also working on a solution
to the long checkpoints and health system.

According to industry analyst Michael Pachter, Epic's widely popular Gears of War franchise (currently an Xbox 360 exclusive, with allowed PC ports) is probably headed to the PlayStation 3... eventually.

Pachter recently stated to Game Trailers that "we ('we' apparently meaning Patcher and his analyst pals) pretty much know that Gears of War 3 is probably gonna' come out on PS3." Pretty much, eh? Sounds scientific.

Pachter assumes that Microsoft has a two-game deal with Epic Games and that, barring any extension of that deal, afterward Epic is free to release GoW games on any platform it chooses. Considering the PS3's current lackluster offering of online titles (with the exception of Call of Duty 4 and Resistance: Fall of Man), a Gears of War game on Sony's catch-up console might definitely get some units sold - especially if it were a PS3 exclusive.

Meanwhile the rest of us anxiously await Gears of War 2.

GameSpot (Finally) Responds to 'GerstmannGate' Questions

At long last, GameSpot has issued a full Q&A regarding Jeff Gerstmann's firing and the swarms of conspiracy-theory rumors surrounding it, his Kane & Lynch review, the many edits to it, Eidos's reaction to it, and what really motivated the firing.

Unlike the last statement, this post contains significantly less legal stonewalling and seeming coverup.

Q: Why was the Kane & Lynch review text altered?

A: Jeff's supervisors and select members of the edit team felt the
review's negativity did not match its "fair" 6.0 rating. The copy was
adjusted several days after its publication so that it better meshed
with its score, which remained unchanged. The achievements and demerits
it received were also left unaltered. Additionally, clarifications were
made concerning the game's multiplayer mode and to include differences
between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game.

Q: Why was the Kane & Lynch video review taken down?

A: Both the text and video reviews of Kane & Lynch went up on
Tuesday, November 13. The morning of Wednesday, November 14, the video
was taken down due to concerns of quality. Specifically, its audio was
deemed inferior due to a faulty microphone. There were also concerns
about the limited amount of footage, which was unrepresentative of the
game in the review.

Q: Why wasn't the video immediately reposted?

A: Due to the crush of high-profile games being released the
following week, there were insufficient resources to reshoot and
re-edit the video review.
And...

Q: Was Eidos Interactive upset by the game's review?

A: It has been confirmed that Eidos representatives expressed their
displeasure to their appropriate contacts at GameSpot, but not to
editorial directly. It was not the first time a publisher has voiced
disappointment with a game review, and it won't be the last. However,
it is strict GameSpot policy never to let any such feelings result in a
review score to be altered or a video review to be pulled.

Q: Did Eidos' disappointment cause Jeff to be terminated?

A: Absolutely not.

Q: Did Eidos' disappointment cause the alteration of the review text?

A: Absolutely not.

Q: Did Eidos' disappointment lead to the video review being pulled down?

A: Absolutely not.

Q: Why was GameSpot "skinned" with Kane & Lynch ads when Jeff was terminated?

A: Due to design and development considerations, media buys on GameSpot
are made weeks in advance. The timing of said ads was extremely
unfortunate but was purely coincidental and determined solely by the
game's release date of November 13, 2007.

It seems like a rather thorough squelching of the fires. It was just a fantastic series of coincidences all happening at just the right time in just the right order to completely throw several companies' credibility into question. Happens all the time.

Gerstmann's K&L Review Was Heavily 'Toned Down' Post-Firing

We all knew that shortly after Jeff Gerstmann was fired from GameSpot, some changes were made to his Kane & Lynch review. What we didn't know was how extensive those changes were.

Going off of a Google cache of an EB Games page that featured the original review, Joystiq was able to piece together all of the edits made to the original version.

Basically, it was heavily toned down in attitude. The wording of several complaints goes from active to passive neutral, such as the line:

"it's extremely difficult to care about anything that's happening to them." [the main characters]

...being changed to...

"it'll probably be tough for you to find anyone to latch onto and care about, even if you typically go for this sort of crime drama on TV or in movies."

And...

"So whether you're doing the shooting yourself or hanging back and letting your men do the dirty work, the game is a real letdown."

...to...

"So whether you're doing the shooting yourself or hanging back and letting your men do the dirty work, the game is a real disappointment, especially when you consider how well this same sort of stuff worked in the developer's previous squad-based game, Freedom Fighters."

The whole thing seems watered down to remove some of the "bite." It makes you wonder, if GameSpot actually had a problem with it, wouldn't they have changed these things during the pre-publishing process where nearly everybody on the review team looks over and makes changes to a review? The fact that the changes were made after publishing makes it seem like the changes were done at the request of an outside party.

If Jeff was fired for submitting an angrily-worded review instead of a nice, casual, everbody's-a-winner one, the review either wouldn't have been published or the changes would have been made before publishing. Making the changes after publishing means somebody saw it and decided it needed to be changed, be them from CNet management, a GameSpot manager who didn't see the review pre-publication, or someone from some outside party like a game developer or something.

The full body of the review with modifications highlighted by Joystiq is included after the jump.

Gamespot's Kane & Lynch Review
By Jeff Gerstmann

Kane & Lynch: Dead Men has a lot of promise, but nothing in this game works out nearly as well as you'd hope.

[Removed from original: Kane & Lynch: Dead Men is
an ugly game, and we're not necessarily talking about the graphics.
This criminal tale is packed with a collection of completely unlikable
characters with no redeeming value whatsoever. It's impossible to even
root for them as antiheroes. Once you get past the messy, meaningless
story, things don't get too much better because you're saddled with
clunky artificial intelligence on the part of your allies and your
enemies, as well as a core shooting mechanic that simply doesn't
satisfy. The unfortunate part is that the game does have a few bright
points and feels like it had a lot of potential that just didn't come
together as well as anyone must have hoped.]

[Added
in edits: Io Interactive is best known for its stealth-focused Hitman
series, but there's nothing quiet and sneaky about its latest release,
Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. This time around, the developer put
together a crime-themed shooter that starts out with a couple of
simple, heist-like objectives and then rapidly spins out of control
until, without much warning, you're gunning down soldiers in the middle
of a foreign revolution. While the journey sounds interesting at first,
and has a few bright points, it's weighed down by bad storytelling, a
real lack of character development, and a host of gameplay-related
issues. The end result is a game that squanders much of its potential
and just doesn't come together as well as it probably should have.]

The story mode opens with you in the role of Kane, a death row inmate
on his way to his execution, apparently convicted of being a very
savage criminal as part of a notorious gang called The7. You're on your
last ride with a quirky guy named Lynch who tells you to cover your
head. After an explosion, you're both busted out and on the run. That
might sound great, but it's a fate worse than death. The surviving
members of The7 have busted you out to force you to recover something
they think you stole from them. They consider you a traitor and will
kill Kane's family if he doesn't comply. Lynch is sent along for the
ride to watch over Kane and report in if anything weird happens.
Circumstances change over time and the back half plays out like a
revenge tale, but it's a revenge tale where you don't actually care if
anyone actually gets their revenge. Every single person you play as or
encounter is despicable and wholly abrasive; thus, [it's extremely difficult to care about anything that's happening to them.] [it'll
probably be tough for you to find anyone to latch onto and care about,
even if you typically go for this sort of crime drama on TV or in
movies.] You can play through this story alone or with a
friend in co-op mode, though this mode is only available locally and
takes place on a vertically split screen that makes it difficult to
follow the action, even on a widescreen TV.

The core gameplay
in Kane & Lynch is your standard third-person shooter with cover
elements and a light dusting of squad tactics. You can fire from the
hip, but it's somewhat more accurate to fire while aiming.
Unfortunately, even when you're aiming, hitting your targets is more
difficult than it should be because your automatic fire has a wide
spread on it. Kane is supposedly a badass arch-criminal; he should be
able to hit his targets with short, controlled bursts. You're able to
get behind cover and either blindfire or pop out for aimed shots, but
there's no easy way to stick to walls. You don't press a button or
anything; instead you sort of get up against a wall and turn sideways.
Then after jiggling the controls back and forth a bit, you'll
eventually snap into place to get behind cover. It's such a pain that
you'll rarely want to use it, and it seems like you're always snapping
into cover behind something at the most inopportune times, making the
game quite frustrating. There's no health meter, but if you go down,
you don't die immediately either. You can be revived by one of your
teammates with an adrenaline shot. If you get that shot too frequently,
you'll overdose and die. If your teammates don't reach you in time,
you'll die too. Also, if one of the guys on your crew gets dropped, you
have to make sure he gets revived. If he dies, the game ends. Between
your poor accuracy, the enemy's sharp accuracy, and the boneheaded AI
from your squadmates, this all adds up to you keeping your squad on a
very short leash.
When you've got a team with you, you can order
team members around individually or order the team all at once by
telling it to regroup to your location, move to a specific spot, or
attack specific targets. Telling team members to move to locations is
the most effective move because you can keep them close and revive them
when they get shot down. Sending them after targets results in your
squad running around aimlessly and trying to get too close to targets.
That leads to them getting dropped in the line of fire, where you
probably won't be able to rescue them. So whether you're doing the shooting yourself or hanging back and letting your men do the dirty work, the game is a real [letdown.] [disappointment,
especially when you consider how well this same sort of stuff worked in
the developer's previous squad-based game, Freedom Fighters.]

There's only one multiplayer mode in Kane & Lynch, and it's a great idea. [Unfortunately, the idea doesn't translate into a great or long-lasting experience.] It's called Fragile Alliance and puts up to eight players in one team of criminals. Then,
it sets the team off to steal money, cocaine, and jewels from various
locations seen in the single-player game. So you might start out in
front of a bank, run in, collect a bunch of cash, and then escape from
in a van out back. The catch is the way the money is split up among
teammates. If you all work together, the money is split evenly. But at
any point, a player can go rogue and gun down one of his teammates.
This brands you a traitor; thus, any money you collect and escape with
is yours to keep. Of course, this also means that other players who are
still part of the team will try to waste you before you escape with
their hard-stolen loot. So every round is a tentative affair where you
always expect the worst--you're just never sure when someone's going to
finally turn on you. When you die, whether it's from the AI that
opposes you or another player, you respawn on the other side of the
heist. Now you need to stop the heist by eliminating the other players
and you earn money by collecting it before the criminals collect.

[It's a great idea that's] [It's a bummer that the multiplayer is] mucked up by a few different things.
First, you're still playing Kane & Lynch, so all of the inaccurate
firing issues and poor cover tactics from the single-player still
apply. But another problem is that you can see the names of the other
players over their heads from a distance and through walls, even if
they're on the other side. While you can run while crouched to make
your name disappear, it's pretty weak that you can see the names of the
police team members as they head your way. There's no element of
surprise. Also, there are only a handful of different scenarios for
this, and they play out the same way every single time. The security
guards are always in the same positions in the bank and the cops are
always waiting for you right outside, so it gets old fast.

[Technically,] [While
it might seem like a basic heist game, Kane & Lynch does a good job
of moving the action around, and you'll see a variety of different
environments and situations, ranging from banks, to prison breaks, to
full-scale conflicts in the middle of illicit poppy fields. It also has
some] good-looking player models, with Kane and Lynch both
looking appropriate as over-the-hill criminals. And even though their
faces don't animate much in-game, they still look good. Most of the
animation isn't so hot, though, and you'll see a few ugly textures here
and there too. Some of it looks a bit unfinished, like the way you see
guys go through the motion of hitting you with an adrenaline shot, but
their hands are actually empty.

[The multiplayer
mode is a really cool idea that leaves you wondering who's going to
turn traitor on you, but it isn't strong enough to make you forget the
game's other problems.]

The soundtrack is probably
the best part of the whole game, delivering some tense music when the
game calls for it. There's a lot of voice acting in the game. The
voices are appropriate for the characters, but the dialogue is hokey
and filled with [lazy] [gratuitous] cursing.
The good ol' F word is certainly appropriate, given the nature of what
these guys are doing, but when it's every third word out of every
character's mouth, it comes across as a crutch that drags down the rest
of the game a bit. Lynch frequently responds to your squad-orders by
just shouting "F*** you!" [That's just lame.] [Things like that just make the game feel purposely abrasive, and not in a "gritty" or "cool" sort of way.]

[The
game is available on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as of this writing,
and the differences between the two versions are minimal. Both games
have occasional frame rate issues and the control issues with finding
cover and hitting targets are noticeable in both. The only real
difference is that the PlayStation 3 version doesn't seem to have voice
chat support. The multiplayer mode only really clicks when you can talk
things out with other players and try to convince them that you're not
going to turn traitor--only to turn traitor on them and then laugh
about it. Without that, the whole experience feels a little dry. The
Xbox 360 version also has the standard set of 1,000 achievement points,
a few of which reward you for specific moments in co-op, like having
the player controlling Lynch put a few cops out of their misery, rather
than leaving them to writhe on the ground.]

Kane & Lynch: Dead Men is a premise with promise,
[but the gameplay isn't sound while the story and characters go
nowhere. And it's got enough random AI-based glitches to make you want
to scream. Considering] [and if you've been waiting
patiently for a game to really dive into the whole "crew-based heist
tale" concept, you might be able to look past some of the story flaws.
But when you consider] the nearly ridiculous
number of extremely high-quality shooters available recently, there's
not much room for something like Kane & Lynch, [but] [even taking into account the somewhat unique nature of its story. That said,] the
multiplayer is a smart idea that's worth seeing, even if playing it
makes you wish that it was used in another, better game.

[Editor's
Note: This review has been updated to include differences between the
Xbox 360 and PS3 versions and a clarification on the game's multiplayer
mode.]

Its minigames have been adjusted to feature sixaxis support and Insomniac has even tossed in dancing pirates, but despite how gorgeous the game looks or how well the gameplay mechanics function, we've been down this road before - five times, six if you happened to splurge on the PSP version.

While I've always had a soft spot for our furry hero and his robotic pal, I'm afraid that Tools of Destruction has done it for me. This is the same experience, the same gameplay, lackluster plot, annoying save system, and patch-work minigames that I've been through since the franchise's inception. In summation, I am all Ratchet'ed out. If you were looking for a new, refreshing direction for the series' PlayStation 3 debut, this isn't it.

Click here for an explanation of our review and scoring format.

Tools of Destruction offers yet another instance in which I'm forced to scratch my head and wonder if I've been immersed in the industry so long that I'm now out of the touch with the average gamer. It's one of Sony's (and Insomniac's) flagship titles, and people seem to love it. In a sense I understand their infatuation: it's classic R&C humor, the same simplistic gameplay mechanics at work (collect this statue, turn that bolt, slaughter these boxes, etc), those same breathtaking visuals now transplanted to the PlayStation 3, and so on. I doubt that anyone could effectively argue that the title isn't playable, enjoyable, or a success ("success" being defined here as a complete single-player experience that doesn't feel pushed out the door), it's just that it's the same game.

At this point I've collected a trillion bolts, played a hundred rounds of "beat this minigame to open a door", and explored who-knows how many planets while popping virtual caps into aliens/robots/alien robots. I've made the bad guys dance; I've turned them into various creatures and whacked them to death with a wrench. I've grind-booted my way across giant chasms, been swept up in weapons-upgrade options, and watched my last plot item presented as a fake commercial. I have done it all, and then I completed Tools of Destruction and did it again, this time in HD glory. The real question isn't whether the game is worth your time but whether you'd like to pay $59.99 for the privilege of doing the same stuff in 720p - though Ratchet does look fly.

But enough negativity; Tools of Destruction, similar to every R&C game on the market, shares the franchise's ups as well as downs. The visuals are amazing and showcase just what the PlayStation 3 can do when a developer is willing to spend the time and tap the system's resources. Even with fifty pirates dancing a groovitron jig while Ratchet pummels them with his grenade-gun and other torturous devices, the framerate keeps up with the action, down to the detailing in Ratchet's fur as he sets his enemies ablaze. The game's unique presentation, another hallmark of the series, is just as fun and spoofy as ever, making grand use of holovids (think "upgraded" infobots) for plot progression; cutscenes are quick and entertaining, with the same high-quality voice performances from a cast you know and love.

I hate you, little metal ball.

The simplistic gameplay is almost enough to make you feel nostalgic. The title is easy to play through and very direct, a bonus for kiddies who hate sitting through an hour's worth of cinematics to find out what's going on. There are the same mechanics that series veterans will instantly recognize: five version upgrades for weaponry, fun devices that turn enemies into cutesy penguins (nothing makes you appreciate the benefits of being a superior species than whacking a penguin into space), weapon upgrades via vendors, armor shopping (those lombaxes always did have a sense of style), and minigames that now utilize the sixaxis controller's tilt feature. While rolling a ball around to connect circuits, gliding through hoops, shaking that pirate booty, and steering tornadoes toward foes all spruce up the gameplay, they also severely distract from it, reminding the player that she's not saving the galaxy but trying to maneuver a stupid ball so she can save the galaxy. I applaud Insomniac for actually trying to capitalize on the motion sensor technology, but the bulk of this attempt was frustrating and annoying.

While we're on the topic, apparently some people have it in their heads that frustrating and challenging equate to the same thing. If you've been reading up on Tools then you've probably concluded that it's a breeze "until the end" - when Insomniac introduces a million enhanced robots that no longer die in one or two shots. It's at this point when gamers begin to "appreciate" the outdated save-anywhere system, which, if you've been through a Ratchet game before, you already know is a lie. I complained five years ago in a review of the original R&C that enabling me to save-anywhere is bloody pointless if I have to load up from the start of a planet; giving me a taxi or a teleport to certain sections of a level doesn't cut it. This is the next-generation of PlayStation hardware and Insomniac still won't let me save-anywhere and load-up from where I saved - why the hell not?

The checkpoint system isn't much better. Ideally as you progress from one area to the next you trigger a checkpoint such that, if you die, you don't have to re-complete the same segments over and over. The checkpoint system here doesn't operate this way; when Ratchet clears an area and, say, approaches a boss or some other physical feat that you're going to die at, it's back two-three segments for you so you can re-work your way to a specific area just to do it all over again. About the time you reach your breaking point is when you realize that you can't save and call it for the day because you'll be loading up at the start of the level. I think this is where I lost another piece of my soul.

The real disappointment in Tools of Destruction is that it's the same content we've been through before, and while it's still good it's hardly great. Because you've done all this stuff several games ago there's simply little to no motivation for you to go through it again; there's no pull here, and you don't even remember there's a storyline until the last two-three planets. What the franchise needs is not a million bolts, boxes, aliens, or weapon upgrades but a new direction, a fresh take for our old and tired comedic duo, preferably one that doesn't detract from the experience with trivial minigames and sixaxis-controlled tornadoes that drive me crazy.

Okay, Insomniac: you've proven what you can do with the power of the PlayStation 3 - now let's see if you can take that engine and those beautiful visuals and make a great game out of it.

Publisher: SCEA
Developer: Insomniac Games
Release: Oct 23, 2007
MSRP: $59.99
Everyone 10+

Official Kane & Lynch Website Lies About Its Scores

At the heart of this Jeff Gerstmann controversy is the unconfirmed notion that Eidos was upset with GameSpot's 6/10 review of the game. While we have no way of knowing if that is actually what happened, it seems that Eidos might just be completely delusional about the media reception for the game.

If you go to the official Kane & Lynch website and watch the flash intro that plays before the main content appears, you'll see two excerpts from reviews flash by with a 5-star rating for each. The problem is, those reviews did not issue a 5-star, or 100% rating.

It lists a GameSpy review with the quote, "It's the best emulation of being in the midst of a Michael Mann movie we've ever seen." This quote doesn't exist from GameSpy's review. It's pulled from some early E3 2007 coverage that would have been published at least 5 months ago. The preview issues no kind of score or rating that could be perceived as a 5-star rating.

In fact, GameSpy's actual review gave Kane & Lynch a 3-star rating. Three stars, on a 5-star scale, equates to a 60%, or 6-out-of-10 score, which is exactly what Gerstmann gave the game.

The Kane & Lynch webpage also lists a quote from Game Informer: "A mercenary, a psychopath, & a bundle of cash... what could go wrong?" and also lists it with a 5-star rating. That quote also does not appear in Game Informer's review, it seems to be pulled from an early preview. And if you guessed that Game Informer's actual review gave the game a 5-star score, you'd be both wrong and stupid. They gave it a 7/10.

It's common for game PR to include preview quotes on early advertisements, as those are the only kind of quotes available before the game's release. Never before, however, have I seen preview quotes being paraded around as reviews, and also given completely imaginary scores to boot.

Delusion. Complete delusion.

Screenshots of the website are included after the jump.

UPDATE: GameBump (that's us) gave Kane & Lynch a 1-star review. And no, it's not a joke.
UPDATE UPDATE: Apparently people are mad at Eidos because "Eidos Bashing" is the thing to do.

Activision and Vivendi Game have both announced today that they will be merging to form a new company, Activision Blizzard.

Activision is one of the largest publishers of video games, owning the Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, and Tony Hawk licenses. Vivendi Gamess games is one of the smaller, less awesome publishers but owned by Vivendi Universal, a gigantic media company. Vivendi Games owns Blizzard, developer and creator of such cash-factories as World of Warcraft, Warcraft, Starcraft, and has nothing to do with Witchcraft. Vivendi Games also currently owns the rights to not-as-good-as-they-used-to-be Crash Bandicoot and Spyro.

After looking over the press release (linked in PDF format), it appears that this isn't exactly a straight merger.
Activision isn't changing its name to Activision Blizzard.
Quoth the press release: "Under the terms of the agreement, Vivendi Games will be merged with a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision."

Activision Blizzard will be a new company, owned by Activision. They'll be spending $4 billion to buy up 145.6 million of their own shares, using $1.7 billion that Vivendi Games brings to the table from its own shares.

If I've decoded this correctly, I'd say that Activision is actually absorbing Vivendi, and mainly to obtain ownership of Blizzard. Now, instead of Blizzard games being published by Vivendi, they'll be published by "Activision Blizzard." Vivendi Games will probably disappear, though the name and property will be owned by Activision (not by Vivendi Universal, interestingly)

I suppose it's not technically a buyout, if anything I'd say the situation was that Vivendi running out of money but they had the valuable Blizzard crew, so they worked it out so Activision could acquire Blizzard by first taking over Vivendi Games. Business is confusing. Were this a Japanese business transaction, however, it would be infinitely more confusing.

Gerstmann Firing Not GameSpot's Fault, Says Mod

According to a post by a moderator at the linked page of the GameSpot forums, if anybody at the GameSpot (not Eidos) side of this issue is to be blamed, it's CNET, not GameSpot itself. CNET handles advertising for GameSpot and all other property sites, and they handle hiring/firing.

From the thread:

People, don't direct your anger at Gamespot. This is CNet's meddling.
Gamespot consists just of the editorial, news, community, and
development teams. It's CNet's marketing that puts the ads up. CNet's
marketing that complained. CNet is who can fire their EIC.

This makes sense to me. CNet, as owners of GameSpot and damn near a thousand other websites, would be the ones handling HR and marketing rather than having each individual property doing it themselves; that would be redundant.

So who should we blame here? Eidos for pressuring CNet into firing Gerstmann over a bad review of a game they've been paying CNet to promote, or CNet for caving to pressure and firing a journalist for doing his job?

UPDATE: However, there would of course be people within GameSpot's management that can fire people. Complete control wouldn't be handed over to CNet.

Despite its flaws, the characters, striking environments, special weapons and the inclusion of a game editor, longer single player campaign, additional achievements and new multiplayer maps makes Gears of War an exciting game that should not be missed. For those eager to experience an interactive and engaging PC shooter, look no further than Gears of War this holiday season.

Click here for an explanation of our review and scoring format.

Gears of War, originally released on the Xbox 360, was an extraordinary game. It featured gorgeous visuals, interactive gameplay (contributed largely to its run and cover system), and an engaging third person perspective on the narrative side. The game spurred the sale of many systems and persuaded prospective gamers who sat on the fence to join the Xbox 360 camp. After the story mode was finished, fans happily spent hours on multiplayer matches killing and “chain-sawing” their friends online. PC gamers now have the chance to experience Gears of War in addition to all the downloadable content from Xbox Live in one neat package.

The story begins with your role as Marcus Fenix, a soldier charged with war crimes and treason who is left to die alone in the prison barracks. A deadly mutant race known as the Locusts has invaded and destroyed major cities across the globe relentlessly. As the death toll escalates to untold figures, the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) grants a pardon to all their war criminals, Marcus being amongst them, and enlists them in a fight to defend the earth against the Locust Horde. He is joined by his fellow Delta squad comrades and others from Alpha squad, including Dominic Santiago, Damon Baird and the comical Augustus Cole, known as "Cole Train". The storyline in Gears is quite linear in length with occasional decision points that allow you to choose different paths to reach your intended destination. The path you choose will dictate the weapons and ammo spoils found as certain items are only available on your treaded pathway.

Gameplay mechanics remain the same as the 360 version with the traditional "duck and cover" tactics in battle. Buildings, boxes, wooden furniture, cars, stone pillars, road barriers and more can be effectively used to shield Marcus from heavy enemy gunfire. The game continually pressures you to hone your skills by not only interacting with your environment, but also to keep a sharp eye on your active reload meter when your gun is empty. When timed perfectly, your reload time drops and you temporarily gain a boost to the damage dealt to the Locust enemy. Weapons and grenades can be swapped with ease by selecting numerical keys 1 through 4 at any given time. If you miss the mark on the meter, Marcus will curse as he spends more time reloading his weapon than needed. The roadie run maneuver, which allows you to stay low and speed through the area, is executed by holding the spacebar. Though it is useful in the game, holding the spacebar key to run feels awkward and takes a bit of time to get accustomed to.

The arsenal of weapons available includes the Snub Pistol, Gnasher Shotgun, Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle, Grenades and the Hammer of Dawn. The Assault Rifle is a favored weapon as you can gun down your enemies or brutally sever them with a bloody chainsaw attack. Regarding the shotgun and sniper rifle, they are vital for close combat and for eliminating the Locust threat from a safe distance. One big issue I have with using grenades is the time required to toss a single grenade. That’s right. Rather than simply throwing it, you must direct a blue trajectory line indicating where and how high to throw it. There is a tendency for the camera to direct the view upwards making it hard to throw one accurately. Compared to games like Call of Duty, it’s a chore to toss a grenade at the enemy as you make yourself vulnerable for far too long in an open gunfight. The Hammer of Dawn is a powerful weapon that burns and devours the enemy but can only be used outside when a satellite connection is established.

Regarding the AI aspect of the game, the presence of your squad mates draws out mixed reactions. My comrades have saved me on many counts from Locusts that would have killed me. However, the duck and cover tactics easily throw them off as a Locust could be standing behind a road barrier with his shoulder and head clearly visible. Dominic, Baird and Cole don’t seem to notice this and continually shoot the center of the stone barrier already protecting the enemy’s torso, missing their target entirely in open sight. Consequently, the Locusts were able to pin down half my squad leaving me to revive two teammates used as bait to lure me out from cover. The most frustrating scenario was watching them run right by a Locust standing a few feet away without even turning around! Thus, issuing squad-based commands to regroup, cease fire, or attack is a "hit or miss" affair as more often than not, you must rely on your wits and skills to survive. There are two difficulty settings at the start: Casual and Hardcore with the Insane difficulty unlocked once the campaign mode has been completed.

Rather than giving gamers only a straight port, Epic has provided extra content that includes five new game chapters, three new multiplayer maps, game editor, 50 additional achievements and a new multiplayer game mode. You’ll find the five extra game chapters in the latter half of the game that shed light on the events involving an enemy boss encounter and the details of the team’s escape. The multiplayer modes featured are Warzone, Execution, Assassination, Annex and the all new mode, King of the Hill. Warzone pits the COG soldiers against the Locusts in a deathmatch while the Execution mode, though similar, requires you to kill your opponents at close range, either by chainsaw attack or stomping their corpse. Assassination assigns the COG soldiers and Locusts to kill the opposition leader and to hold leadership for that team whereas Annex mode is a race to complete objectives and achieve a targeted score first before the other team. Finally, the new King of the Hill is a territorial challenge in which you must control and defend fixed territory against the opposing team for a specified period of time. This mode shares the same objective as the Execution mode in that you must kill your enemies with special close range attacks. For those who engage in online matches and stats, take note that a Gold subscription may be needed in the Games For Windows Live membership. As for the game editor, you can create customized level designs but it remains unsupported by Epic and Microsoft.

Gears is a stunning game that exceeds the boasted graphics of its 360 predecessor. I was privileged to be able to play the game on an HP Blackbird setup and I was blown away. Breathtaking visuals, solid framerate, smooth animation and polished character designs all contributed to making the game a visceral experience. Not surprisingly, my computer was gasping for dear life trying to run the game on the lowest settings. Make no mistake, Gears is graphically intensive and is meant to be played on a powerful rig at maximum resolution. On the audio side, the sound effects, voice acting and soundtrack fit well within the game’s context in building its dark and sinister atmosphere.

Also available on: 360
Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
Developer: Epic
Release: Nov 6, 2007
MSRP: $49.99
Mature | Online

It's rated M for a reason.

The Darkness is a mixed bag; it definitely contains some intriguing content and follows a somewhat unique storyline, however the mafia elements are extremely cliche. Its presentation is superb at times, aptly dark and tragic, supported with some of the system's best and most horrific visuals to date, but the gameplay is plagued with some annoying and consistent flaws. The worst part is that the gamer spends most of his time shooting out lightbulbs via a very buggy targeting system, which gets old fast. Enemy AI could benefit from a severe boost in intellect, although the AI might have been weakened intentionally to make up for the ease with which Jackie dies in comparison to foes he shoots in the head (foes who get back up, re-aim and shoot through the pain - wish I had those skills). All in all, worth at least a rental.

Click here for an explanation of our review and scoring format.

Even after reviewing console and PC titles for a decade, I still have those moments when I feel that other reviewers must be playing a different game than the one I've got in my hands. The Darkness is one such title; it has a movie-like quality displayed in gorgeous (and graphic, and by graphic I mean twisted and gory) detail, elements of a tragic love-story, the traditional tale of revenge, functional online play, and adorable little demons that run throughout each level doing the master's deadly bidding. It's also got "The Darkness," a monstrous serpent creature older than time, and this evil, repulsive thing is (ironically) the game's saving grace - it keeps the plot fresh, wards off boredom via its numerous darkness abilities, and adds that extra pizazz that keeps The Darkness from being just another shooter, mafia emphasis or not.

But pretty visuals, rivets of blood, and even a trip to "hell" (no spoilers, promise) fail to cure the title's amusing faults. The very plot that eventually becomes the only worthwhile reason for playing is especially generic as far as the mafia goes: an east-coast based Italian family splits into two camps, one headed by our hero, Jackie, destined to present the kindler, gentler face of the mob (unless he's just been hired to kill you, in which case you're screwed) and the other by Jackie's dear ole' Uncle Paulie, a rebellious, crazy mobster who enjoys the modern drug trade against the family's wishes.

The two camps collide on Jackie's 21st birthday, and seizing the opportunity to benefit the most from this bloody feud is the darkness, which feeds on Jackie's fallen prey.

Probably to distract Jackie and keep him from acknowledging that there's a demon inside of him, the darkness goes out of its way to make itself useful. It provides Jackie with demonic arms that toss large objects out of the way and, well, stab people as well as put out lights, and given that the light burns the darkness (reducing your darkness energy) you'll be shooting out or whacking light bulbs from the second area on; hope you don't get bored. The darkness also boasts some magical guns to finish off the undead (and these are Nazi undead, like an evil two-for-one special), a black hole that'll suck up everything in sight (fun for making piles of dead bodies), and a stealth mode.

The stealth option enables the player to slither around as the darkness, biting people's ankles and ripping out hearts in reckless abandon because even if enemies are standing around and observing the massacre in broad daylight less than one foot away, they see nothing. The AI for the darklings, those gruesome fashionistas, isn't much better, with most getting stuck in walls or taking the scenic route to a destination as opposed to walking a straight line from A to B (and when they take the scenic route you can kiss their participation goodbye; 95% of the time, they won't be back).

Hey, there's a demon inside you.

When you're not attacking darkness-style you're left to traditional human weaponry. There are lots of guns, some bigger and more effective than others, and Jackie uses them to shoot stuff dead. The usual culprits are here: pistols, rifles, shotguns, and so on. Most of the time you'll catch yourself cycling through guns just to keep Jackie packin' something with ammo, as enemies take awhile to go down. What's really irritating is that there are portions in which Jackie is swarmed by heavily armed bad guys and stealth kills aren't a feasible option; Jackie is going to die a few times in these scenarios from one or two freak hits while repeated shots to an enemy's head leave the bad guy dazed before he runs and hides behind a box.

The matter is worsened the most by an unreliable targeting system. Bringing down bad guys is possible without carefully aiming for a sweet spot; shooting out lights, however, becomes a steadily frustrating process. You can aim and shoot at a light and miss five times, switch to the demon arm and miss five more, and finally switch back to the gun for another round of shots before finally hitting it. The scenario is repeated God only knows how many times by the game's end, at which point you've died just as often due to losing darkness energy while being shot at because you're running around putting out lights. Fun.

All of these annoyances eventually left me running through levels and main "quests" (the active storyline) just to see how the game ended. I lost interest in shooting the same generic baddies, in ordering darklings around only to have them get immediately stuck or killed. The "extra content" - the little gimmies and bonuses, like comic strips and darkling gear - offer little motivation to play and actually annoyed the hell out of me because in order to access this new material you've got to 1. complete a pointless task and 2. call a long-distance number. If you collect six of these numbers from the previous area then that means you have to dial each of them, one by one, and listen to part of some idiot's dialogue before hanging up. Why not give me the goodies after I find each piece of paper? What's the point of this nonsense?

The Darkness isn't a bad game; it's simply yet another next-generation title that looks better than it plays. If you're a fan of the horror genre and/or enjoy a decent FPS, Jackie fits the bill. You two might even grow on each other, much like the snake sticking out of Jackie's back. Just don't expect an awe-inspiring experience until 2K Games and Starbreeze work out the kinks for the next one.

There's a rumor floating that GameStop is going to cease offering product replacement plans for its Xbox 360s sold, according to a company memo that was leaked by Gamersreports.

As for why GameStop is resorting to this action, it's suggested that the company is losing too much cash on the deal, as Xbox 360s have been known to suffer some serious blips on occasion. At the link you'll find imagery of the memo, courtesy Gamersreports. The memo does state that the 1 year manufacturer's warranty offered by Microsoft is still in effect (though why wouldn't it be?)

The memo is a touch difficult to read as it was taken via cell phone.
