GH Review: Ford Bold Moves Street Racing (PS2)

This review was originally published on Gaming Horizon, GameBump's predecessor. Its format does not match our own but we support its content. It was written by Eric Dayday.

The Ford Racing games have been known as budget titles aimed
squarely at a specific target group; in this case, it’s fans of the Ford Motor
Company. With its budget price, you usually get what you pay for – a mildly
entertaining racing title that offers the bare essentials. Surprisingly, there
are already three entries in the series, and here we have the fourth, Ford
Racing: Bold Moves.

In trying to appeal their target group, Bold Moves will
easily entertain and satisfy lovers of one of America’s
most well-known brands. Those who will love this game even more are the
die-hard fans of Ford’s most popular car line, the pony legend itself, the
Mustang. There are plenty of ‘Stangs to choose from, ranging from the ’68 to
the 2004 concept GT-R. They’ve even included the just recently released 2007
Shelby Cobra GT500 - a pony paradise indeed. However, while Mustangs make up
the majority of the car roster, there are still other cars available; it’s just
very clear that Mustangs were the focus.

The cars themselves look pretty darn nice. They’re all
accurately modeled and they look good in motion because the frame rate stays
smooth. The only gripe is that the reflections off the cars don’t look very
realistic giving all of the car models a plastic look. There are also some
crude damage models, but nothing major. All you will see are some minor dents
here and there along with a slightly crunched fender for good measure.
Unfortunately, it’s all cosmetic. The damage doesn’t change a thing when it comes
to handling. But, at least they all sound like they should. Some have a thick,
hearty rev while other less powerful ones have that high-pitched buzz.

Bold Moves serves up the usual modes most other racing games
have: single race, championship, time attack, multiplayer. Single race is exactly
as it sounds – a single race again five computer controlled racers whose cars
are based on what car you selected. It’s a good move to keep things at an even
keel instead of being able to choose an overpowered car and blow away the
competition. In time attack, you’re given a set number of laps to break the
current best lap record. Multiplayer has you racing another human opponent;
it’s a shame, however, that it’s only you and your friend with no added AI cars
to compete with as well.

When it comes to championship races, there are two ways to
play – solo or team-racing. Solo mode is relatively boring because it’s
mindless driving. And unlike in single race, here you actually can grab the
best car in a particular class and outmuscle the competition. Team racing
however, is quite fun as it adds some elements that require some strategy. In
team racing, you’re responsible for two cars. You can switch on the fly at any
time between the two. The objective is to place both cars as high as possible
because points are awarded to each position. Thus, placing both cars first and
second gives you the most points possible. This aspect adds loads of strategy
within a single race. Push to the front with one car, follow with the next?
Leapfrog each car with both, or leap frog the competition slowly? Which car
should you lead with and which should you use to block? And those are just a
few questions you’ll be asking yourself as you participate in these races. What
helps is the fact that you can order your AI controlled car to draft or block
and it actually does a decent job of performing that task – most of the time.

It’s definitely a mode I’d like to see implemented in the
other big name racing titles. Another strategic element is outside of races.
Credits are used to buy and unlock new cars during a championship, but in team
racing, if your pair of cars incurred some damage, your credits will be reduced
to cover the costs of repairs. This means you can’t just bull rush your way to
the front smacking every one else on the way there. What’s odd is that in
solo-racing, the damage element is nowhere to be found, so playing bumper cars
is a viable strategy.

The racing, the meat of the game, is sadly very boring. Bold
Moves definitely falls into the arcade-style category of racer, but that’s
using a loose definition at best. It boils down to mash on the gas, brake
slightly into a sharp turn (no need to brake if it’s shallow), and just keep
driving. There isn’t much in the way of skill needed at all here.

The lack of customization hurts a bit too. The only thing
you can do to a car is change its color. But factor in how boring the actual
racing is and maybe adding in customization options wouldn’t have helped much.

The AI cars are downright stupid. They take every
opportunity to either ram your backside causing you to fishtail or if you’re
near a guardrail, they sacrifice a chance to pass to ram you right into it.
It’s actually not so bad because you don’t lose much speed when you run into
something, which itself isn’t a good thing, but it is quite annoying. Doesn’t
the AI have anything better to do than beating up on you, like say, winning the
race? Unfortunately, your teammate AI likes to do this too, even when you give
it a command, which is why I mentioned that the team AI works “most of the time”.
I get the feeling that they seriously wanted to make this a pseudo-demolition
derby game. That’s the only explanation I can think of for having the computer
controlled cars want to trade paint at every possible instance.

While the cars look nice, other than their plastic look, the
tracks and environments are dull and lifeless. In fact, I had a hard time
distinguishing if I was on a different track because they all started to blur
together in my head. All the tracks that share a theme – urban city roads or
country back roads – tend to look the same, with the only difference being the
track shape.

The team concept is a fine idea and it’s executed rather
well here. The rest of the game, however, suffers from a lack of polish and
overall fun. Solo racing is boring and mindless; the AI is stupid in some cases
and out for blood in every other case; and lackluster track and environment
designs makes this unworthy of a purchase for casual racing fans. Only if
you’re a fan of the classic blue oval should you even consider plopping down
cash for this budget title – emphasis on budget.

Team racing is a great concept, but spotty AI and boredom of racing in general aren't so hot.

Points for the accurately modeled cars, but none for their plastic look and boring environs.

The cars sound as they should. Soundtrack is forgettable.

Little strategy involved in actual racing; blood-thirsty AI. Bold Moves isn't so bold.

Quite a few cars to unlock, but after that, not much incentive to keep playing.

GH Review: AND 1 Streetball (PS2)

This review was originally published on Gaming Horizon, GameBump's predecessor. Its format does not match our own but we support its content. It was written by Eric Dayday.

It seems like it was yesterday that And1 was a fledgling
shoe company looking to make it big using a grassroots campaign like no one had
ever seen before – touring around the country playing playground basketball
games that turned into ball-handling exhibitions by an extremely talented crew
of streetballers. Fast-forward to today and the And1 Mixtape Tour is so popular
that simple mentions of the name will illicit thoughts of insane dribbling
moves. The shoe line sells well and the Mixtape crew even has its own
television show on ESPN. Videogames seemed to be a perfect medium to venture
into next just by the nature of the beast, but after giving it a playthrough,
I’m not so sure this is a good first step.

Unfortunately, the only thing I can really say that I
enjoyed about And1 Streetball is the innovative I-Ball controls, but even that
has problems. But let’s deal with the highlights for now. When controlling the
ball handler, I-Ball controls allow you to bust out some of the same impressive
tricks real-life ballers like the Professor use to trick and deke around
unsuspecting defenders. Sounds a little like NBA
Street’s system, but here button combinations
aren’t utilized. Instead, each of the eight directions on the right analog
stick corresponds to a particular trick.

The I-Ball controls get even deeper by allowing for combos –
up to three if you time things correctly. Dribbling in place and tilting the
right stick in a direction pulls off a level 1 trick. From there, a direction
on both analog sticks results in a moving level 2 trick. This then leads to the
last combo tier in which you can break your opponent’s ankles, which for those
who don’t understand the jargon means that you just sat the man guarding you
flat on his butt. All of these tricks build up a meter that gives you a mic
when filled. Up to three mics can be built up and can be unleashed in two ways
– either as generic animated sequences that guarantees a bucket worth three to
five points (known as breakdowns) or to set the whole team on fire (just like
the old NBA Jam games) that increases all of the abilities for the entire team.

Now we get to the holes in the I-Ball controls, which sound
good and fun on paper, but as with most things that follow that phrase, is
executed poorly. There’s a color coded icon underneath the ballhandler that
let’s you know the timing of how to combo tricks together. But, since the
responsiveness of the controls is downright horrible, the icon doesn’t help a
bit. It’ll get to the point that you’ll just randomly move the analog sticks in
directions hoping that the moves will chain together. And the anklebreaker
meter, which is what third tier tricks are dependent on, has one huge
shortcoming – it’s based on proximity. So say you’re guarding someone who is
building the meter fast. All you have to do to avoid being blown by is to
simply walk away from him and voila, the meter is drained and cannot be filled
again until you come near the handler. The computer can also do the same to you
when you’re trying to fill it up.

With that in mind, you’d think that playing soft would be
the way to go and to start using jump shots to win games. Well, that strategy
doesn’t work either because it seems like everyone in the game has horrible
range. What this means is that games all boil down to one-on-one matchups
trying to build up as many mics as possible then spending them all in quick
succession as three-to-five point buckets to gain a huge lead.

Defense isn’t worth playing at all seeing as the collision
detection isn’t spot on. You’ll have more luck blindly running around the
defensive half-court while wailing on the steal button than actually trying to
guard someone. That’s why you’ll want to save those breakdowns to score points
in chunks because the computer WILL score and score often.

In the game modes department, And1 doesn’t offer too much,
but there is a good variety in match types. One-on-one, half-court
three-on-three, and full-court three-on-three to five-on-fives; perfect options
for those who play gym and street ball. Then there’s a story mode that uses all
of those match types as well as throwing other “side games” your way.

In story mode, you take a created character on tour with the
rest of the Mixtape crew. Your prospect starts out in New Jersey and as you win
games and meet other goals to stay on
the tour, you’ll eventually reach such locales as the ATL aka Atlanta, the
ILLadelph aka Philadelphia, and even Paris. At each stop, you’ll play games
with varied team numbers. There are also side missions in which you’ll go
one-on-one with a Mixtape superstar that lets you gain new moves or improve
your created baller’s skill if you happen to win. Unfortunately, in almost all
story instances, winning isn’t the only thing you need to do to move on. There
are extra goals that need to be met like break an opponent’s ankle three times
or pull off two breakdowns. For those of you who played NBA 07: The Life, you
know exactly what this means – frustration when you work so hard to win against
a tough team only to really lose because you failed to achieve the side goals.
Story mode repeats itself very quickly. The only reason why I see anyone going
deep into this is to build up the created character, but even then it’s so
repetitive that doing that is a boring mind-numbing process.

Visually, And1 Streetball isn’t all that pretty to look at
either. The character models look really good and the resemblance to their
real-life counterparts is almost spot-on. Animations, however, look stilted.
With so many tricks to pull-off, there is bound to be a transition between two
that looks unnatural or in some cases completely missing. Another thing is that
the players look like they’re skating across the court. Basketball games
earlier in this generation had that problem, so to see it here is
disheartening.

On the sound front, some of the And1 stars lend their voices
to the game, but they only show up in small sound bites during the short story
mode cutscenes. At least they sound natural. The announcer DJ, however, is
annoying, but that could be a personal preference. The soundtrack is flooded
with hip-hop. It’s not so bad, but I hated the fact that during menus, the
tracks aren’t randomized so that every time you come into a new menu, the same
song is repeated. Because of this, I think I only heard about a quarter of the
soundtrack which is sad really. I read the music credits in the manual and
there are some tracks on there I’d like to hear more often, but because it
always starts at same song, I got shafted.

Based on how much the license has to offer, And1 Streetball
could have offered a new twist on an old formula by introducing a bit of
original gameplay with its I-Ball controls. But, because those I-Ball controls
are unresponsive and some certain broken mechanics like the anklebreaker meter,
and a boring story mode, what And1 fans were given is a complete stinker. It
all seems good on paper, but the execution is sorely lacking. Those looking for
an And1 fix would be better served buying one of their DVDs or catching a
replay on ESPN.

Innovative I-Ball Controls, but severe shortcomings in other places leaves much to be desired.

Nice character models; horrible transition animations.

Authentic voices from Mixtape crew and good soundtrack. Randomized playlist would be nice.

I-Ball and Story mode are fun initially, but that joy dies quickly.

Other than completing story mode to build up a character, nothing much to come back to.

When Capcom announced that Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting would be available for download on Xbox Live, fighting game fans everywhere rejoiced. It originally had a release date of "early 2006", which was then changed to "Q1 2006". That in turn was changed to "Q2 2006" and well, Q2 is almost up.

And now, there's little word coming out of Capcom's camp other than a generic "Capcom has not yet announced a specific release date or pricing for this game."

July 30 is posted as the release date on the Australian XBL website, but what about the rest of the world?
GH Preview: NFL Street 2 Unleashed (PSP)

This preview was originally published on Gaming Horizon, GameBump's predecessor. Its format does not match our own but we support its content.

Even though Electronic Arts isn’t bringing the mega popular Madden NFL title to the PlayStation Portable at launch, the company is bringing another popular football title out, NFL Street 2 Unleashed.
Unleashed is very similar to the NFL Street 2 that recently released for the consoles, except for the fact that the game is scaled down to the PSP and has a number of added features. Beyond that though, Unleashed is close to being a port of the popular football street title.
Graphically, the game moves quick at what EA is saying is approximately 30 frames-per-second and it sure looks like it as we have seen gameplay close to the final build. A couple of months back, questions were raised on whether the game would be able to play up to that speed, but we can tell you now that it certainly does. Of course, player details aren’t quite up to par from their console counterparts, but graphically the game is still very impressive. The game does fit all twelve players on the small PSP screen and graphically it still looks good. You’ll also notice close-ups look pretty close to their NFL counterparts between plays and finally the game also sports endzone dances and more.
Once you get to in-game options this is where the real fun begins. Unleashed features the training mode that allows you to go through all the basics like passing, running and defense and thank goodness for those who’ve played the game before, yes you are able to skip the tutorials or view what you’d like. The game also includes career mode, titled Own the City, where you create-a-player and join a team as you battle other teams in the city.
NFL Street 2 Unleashed also includes a slew of minigames for those on the go who don’t have time to play a full game. The nine games that are also available through WiFi play include returning games like crush the carrier, open field showdown and jump-ball battle as well as two-minute drill that allows you to score as much as possible in two minutes and then your opponent tries to beat your score. Also the street slalom where your player goes through obstacles, the four-on-four game and the style standoff that lets you battle it out against your competitor in a dance contest.
Besides the added minigames, EA has included two of the original NFL Street environments, those being the Courtyard and the Pit. Another addition they have also included is classic teams and classic players like Jerry Rice when he played for the 49ers.
The only drawback for NFL Street 2 Unleashed right now is the load times, which are rumored to be quite long. Hopefully the team from Electronic Arts can knock them down a little bit before the title’s release.

NFL Street 2 Unleashed certainly looks to be a must-have game for football fans, and especially those who like the NFL Street franchise. The game is essentially a port of the recent NFL Street 2 title, but with added features like WiFi play and extra minigames that should keep players busy whether they are on the go, or have a little more time. NFL Street 2 Unleashed isn’t Madden, but will definitely fill the void at launch for football fans looking to get their fix in the off-season.

GH Preview: NBA Street V3 (NGC)

This preview was originally published on Gaming Horizon, GameBump's predecessor. Its format does not match our own but we support its content. It was written by Aaron Thomas.

The original NBA Street combined the big dunks and fast-paced action of NBA Jam, and took it to the streets. The result was a great game that featured lots of scoring, huge dunks, and simple, yet responsive controls. The second game in the series refined the formula by adding more gamebreakers and a host of old-school greats to challenge on your way to becoming the best street baller around. NBA Street V3 will feature all the gameplay that has made the series so popular, plus new courts, new players, online play, and much more.
If you’ve never played NBA Street, the concept is simple, yet very enjoyable. You control a team of three players, and take them up against the best street ballers and NBA players in the world. Style counts, as you will have to showboat to earn one of the game’s vaunted gamebreakers, which are special cut-scenes that feature you throwing down a vicious dunk or a deep three-ball. Not only is a gamebreaker worth an extra point, but it also takes away a point from the opposition – making them just that, "Gamebreakers."
One of V3’s new features is the addition of the trick stick. This will allow you to perform a variety of tricks by combining turbo buttons and pushing the right stick on your controller in various directions. You can then string together tricks into combos to build up to one of the games all new gamebreakers.
The two big gameplay additions are online play and a slam dunk contest. Online play will allow you to hook up with gamers worldwide, and will only be available on the PS2 and the Xbox. The GameCube won’t feature online play, but it will have an exclusive team of "Nintendo All-Stars." Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach will all be fully playable in the game, so if you’d rather have Mario instead of online play…you’re in luck. The slam dunk contest will be judged by an all-star panel, and will have you stringing together different combos so you can throw down the craziest dunks you can think of.
NBA Street V3 features several new courts, all of which are based on real life locations, such as: The Dome (Baltimore), Venice Beach (California), Gunhill (New York), Tandy Rec Center (St. Louis), and many others. Most of these courts will also be playable day or night, which is a first for the series. If you aren’t a fan of any of the new courts, an all-new Court Creator will let you customize your home court from the ground up. Here you’ll be able to select from hundreds of different options including location, court surface, net, and backboard styles. In addition to being able to customize your court, you’ll also be able to give your baller their own unique look using 1,000 customizable assets including hairstyles, shoes, and accessories.
As you’d expect, V3 will feature licensed music in the form of EA Trax. The soundtrack is totally new, and features artists such as: House of Pain, Beastie Boys, De La Soul, Guerilla, Nitty, MC Lyte, and seven others.

Many of the "Street" titles have grown stale due to the short time between updates, and the limited amount of new material being added to each new game. NBA Street V3 has added several features, but it remains to be seen if they will add enough value to the game to warrant a third purchase. For people that haven’t played an NBA Street title, or for those people that skipped the second game, you can count on V3 delivering tight gameplay, and (for an arcade game) a deep number of play options, so it will certainly be worth a look.

NBA Street Showdown is an exclusive version of the hit street basketball title brought to the PlayStation Portable. The game brings with it all the crazy dunks and high-flying fast-paced action fans have come to expect, and finally to a handheld.
Showdown will include a total of twelve street courts, new characters and the gamebreaker feature that has been a staple for the street titles. NBA Street Showdown will feature every NBA team and 22 legends to play with as well. The greatest thing Electronic Arts has done with the NBA Street PSP version is that they’ve kept the three-on-three action the same as a console even though it’s being brought to a smaller screen.
Even when you see the menus and opening sequences before the game starts, you can tell that NBA Street Showdown is one of the best-developed games so far for the PlayStation Portable. But when you dig deeper you’ll see that there are also fine details including shadowing effects on the courts and other small touches that make the game that much better. From what you can see so far, Showdown looks just as good as its console counterparts and this even extends to the player models which really do look like the NBA superstars.
Showdown will include a story mode that allows you to work through the game and unlock items like music, jerseys and more. But a more important advantage with the handheld version is that the game offers quick play options for those who don’t have a lot of time on their hands, but still want to play a game. This is present through the minigames like shot blocker and arcade shootout. If that’s not enough for you, players can also take advantage of the multiplayer party option and two-player WiFi support, both of which should guarantee to make NBA Street Showdown a launch title hit.
The very few drawbacks that we have seen so far with NBA Street Showdown are that it is still in production, so currently from the video we’ve seen it is choppy in parts and the players don’t quite move naturally yet. Also the frame rate might still need a little bit of tweaking, because the game tends to slow down just a little bit.
I’d say the more important drawback for Showdown is the fact that the game features such fast-action sequences that sometimes the screen has a hard time keeping up with the action. The problem with this is that it results in the game losing track of players, but if you’ve played an NBA Street title before you’ll be able to keep up just fine. Both of these factors take very little away from the overly impressive title especially considering how much production time remains and you can probably guarantee that Electronic Arts will almost certainly smooth out the small details to make this an excellent game.

NBA Street Showdown appears to be the furthest game along for the PlayStation Portable from Electronic Arts and it shows. Electronic Arts has transferred the NBA Street franchise over to the handheld incredibly well by bringing the amazing graphics and high speed gameplay to anyone on the go. The few drawbacks that we’ve seen aren’t too worrisome because there is still plenty of time for the developers to smooth out those details. Showdown will almost certainly be a must-buy for any sports fan when the PSP launches, but it should also draw wider appeal because it will be one of the first games to take advantage of the PSP’s WiFi capabilities.
