While it could be, rightfully, argued that the two additional versus mode maps were already paid for in the initial asking price, the freebie pricetag is a welcome sight nontheless. Additionally, they are including a new mode dubbed, "Survival" with 12 maps; it is not known whether these maps are entirely new or simply segmented maps from the four existing campaigns. The new mode is said to be something like an extended siege/assault. Players can look forward to both updates on the same day... at some point in the, hopefully, near future.

At E3 2006, the biggest show in the history of the event, I was shepherded through the thumping mosh pit that was the EA booth by a company rep and led behind a rope and up a flight of stairs into their media demonstration area. It was there that I first saw Amy of Two.

I didn't get to play it; rather, I watched it being played in a room outfitted with two televisions and four Xbox 360s (a debug and retail version for each TV). The small, unventilated room was like a furnace thanks to the heat-machine 360s, but despite the involuntary sauna treatment, I absolutely loved what I saw. Army of Two is a game featuring two protagonists, the secondary character can either be controlled by a buddy in co-op mode or controlled by AI following voice commands given by you.

The voice command feature rocked my socks. The player would speak into his Xbox Live headset commands such as "shoot those guys," "cover me," "help me up," "I need ammo, and so on. I wanted that game so badly and I wanted it to be good.

Xbox World, who had a chance to play around with the code that would have shipped this month, says that what they saw was absolutely horrible.

The game received many release pushbacks, including a recent release-change from November/December 2007 to first-quarter 2008. The extra few months will have to be spent doing some serious fixing, Xbox World says.

They say the two characters are supposed to seem "rebelious" but actually come off as completely unlikeable, and that the entire story is chock full of a ridiculous amount of violence and swear words and comes off as adolescent. Hmm, that sounds like another game I played recently. Unlike Kane & Lynch, though, Army of Two isn't being shoved out the door and the delay may actually give the developers a chance to straighten things up.

This not yet being one of those instances, I'd just like to say that -- whoever he is -- he faces trial today against the Florida Bar who seeks to disbar him for his legal antics as of the last few years.

His attempts to delay the trial this weekend failed, and as much as he decries the discrimination against him for his "Christian activism," because Christians are the most repressed minority in America, the trial will go on as schedule. The court has apparently even cleared out its whole schedule this week just for this.

Will MFA be disbarred? Without any legal leg to stand on, will he still try to poach grieving families and convince them to blame video games? Will he still be invited to appear on Fox News every time someone under the age of 25 commits any act of violence? Who knows. I can't see him going gently into that good night just because of a massive embarrassment like this.
If he were disbarred he would no longer be a lawyer, but one doesn't necessarily need to be a lawyer to file a civil suit for one's self.

Check out GamePolitics for full coverage.

Electronic Arts has published several new screenshots of its MySims on the Nintendo Wii. The game is also being developed for the Nintendo DS and will launch in Q4 for the US. Here's the scoop from EA:

Transforming the traditional Sims gameplay for the Wii and Nintendo DS platforms, MySims moves the player to a delightful but disorganized town where – thanks to the easy and unique controls – they can re-shape everything and make it their own. The town is rundown, but the player can make it much more dynamic. Using a selection of building blocks, unique patterns and engaging creativity tools, players can design furniture and appliances, architect new homes and businesses, and re-define the entire MySims landscape!

As players explore and build up the town, they will get to know dedicated, long-time residents like the always-busy Mayor Rosalyn P. Marshall and Buddy – the mostly-lazy hotel Bellhop. Once things start to look up, they’ll meet and choose from a variety of colorful, would-be residents. Will they build a restaurant for Gino Delicioso the Italian Chef, or will they help Ocean Breeze set up his Yoga studio instead?

Design is everyone’s domain in MySims. From building a new Pizza Oven for Gino to putting the finishing touches on a new roof for Buddy’s busy hotel, each completed task will help the town grow. As it expands to new areas, players will receive special building blocks, decorations and patterns which help customize their unique creations. From furniture and buildings to the town as a whole, every choice informs how residents and visitors feel and behave.

Electronic Arts has been keeping quiet on a brand new original intellectual property for the past year up until now. Their Montreal, Canada studio has been hard at work on Army Of Two for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Not a whole lot is known at this point, but we can expect more news to develop next week at E3.

Alain Tascan, VP and General Manager of EA Montréal has been serving as Executive Producer on the title. Tascan comments, “ARMY OF TWO is a first for EA in many ways. This is the first EA studio to be built entirely from the ground-up. This is EA’s first original title for the next-gen systems. ARMY OF TWO is the first game to put players inside tactical warfare involving Private Military Corporations.”

Reid Schneider, Senior Producer at EA Montréal noted, “This is the game we’ve always wanted to create. Until now, the hardware would not allow us to deliver truly intelligent AI characters. We’ve built this game with co-operative TWO man gameplay as the centerpiece of the experience. Whether you’re playing with PAI or a friend, it’s about the TWO man missions, TWO man strategies and the TWO man advantage that really sets this game apart.”

GH Review: Ape Escape Academy (PSP)

This review was originally published on Gaming Horizon, GameBump's predecessor. Its format does not match our own but we support its content. It was written by Brian Mohr.

Sony’s attempt at a hit party game for the PlayStation
Portable utilizes the monkeys from Ape Escape in a new game titled Ape
Escape Academy.
In Academy, players take on the role of one monkey whose goal is to work his
way through school in order to become an ape and work for Specter.

Players start out in their junior year at school as they are
taught by familiar bosses from Ape Escape 2. Your goal is to graduate from each
grade by beating random mini-games on a tic-tac-toe board. In order to pass a
grade you must complete a certain number of tic-tac-toe lines. It sounds easy,
but as the game progresses it does get a little more challenging.

Ape Escape
Academy includes a total of 45
mini-games; many of them, however, aren’t very good, but I’ll get to that
later. A few are decent including some of the sports themed games like air
hockey and soccer. Another nice touch in the game is the addition of six extra
mini-games that are based on other Sony hits like Everymonkey Golf and Gran
Turismonkey.

Overall the gameplay isn’t what it’s cracked up to be and
instead you’ll notice that the solid graphics and decent audio end up being
Academy’s saving grace. The character models, menus and entire look of the game
are pretty good and very colorful just like any previous game in the series. The
audio is fun and upbeat too as there are plenty of monkey shrieks and other
sound effects. The music is also enjoyable although not too memorable.

There is plenty to be disappointed with in Ape
Escape Academy.
Probably the biggest problem is that it’s hard to tell which age
 group Academy is
geared towards because many of the mini-games are dull, boring or simple. What’s
interesting is that the terrible games are varied and include such things as simple
math problems, knowing world flags, matching shapes among other things. I don’t
know where the makers of Ape Escape thought up these mini-games, but they are
pathetic.

If that’s not a big enough problem, a lot of the game’s
instructions are just terrible. You go into a game not knowing what you’re
exactly supposed to do and because this is a pass-fail game you’re done as soon
as you’ve started. I recall a number of times playing a game for two or three
seconds at best just because the game doesn’t feature a practice mode to try it
out first before it counts.

The problems in Ape Escape go much further than these though
because of a couple other issues. One such problem is that if you’re playing
the game mode on the tic-tac-toe board and you can not accomplish a line, there
is no way to back out of the game and restart. Instead you’ll find yourself
forced to play the last two or three games for no reason or else you’ll be
pressing the home button and restarting the game. This was just a horrible
design flaw that frustrates players to no end. Another issue is that many of
the mini-games feel kind of slow, particularly in the controls.

Finally, the multiplayer in Academy is a joke as there are
just 13 games to “share,” and this isn’t what Sony was intending with the game
sharing feature on the PSP. You’ll actually be sharing the system with someone
else as one person uses the D-pad and L button while the other uses R and the
face buttons. It should also be noted there is a Wi-Fi feature to the game, but
you’ll need four copies to play with others.

Ape Escape
Academy proves that these monkeys
can’t be taught new tricks and they should stick to their platforming roots.
Academy only succeeds in the graphics and sound, but by no means was it even
amazing. It was just like what you’d see in any other Ape Escape game which is
solid.

The game fails where it counts with bad mini-games, terrible
instructions, slow controls and a pretty worthless multiplayer option. Ape
Escape Academy
certainly had the potential to be at least a decent diversion on the PSP
handheld; instead it’s recommended that players just stay away from it altogether.

Controls vary by game. Some are good, but most are slow and slightly complicated.

The character models, menus and look of the game are solid, but the framerate is a little slow.

The monkey sounds and various other audio is decent, but nothing too memorable.

Many of the mini-games are very dull and a lot of them are ridiculously short.

Multiplayer is lackluster and the mini-games won’t keep you coming back.

GH Review: Myst IV Revelation (Xbox)

This review was originally published on Gaming Horizon, GameBump's predecessor. Its format does not match our own but we support its content. It was written by Eric Dayday.

To PC gamers, the Myst series is a classic, whereas to console gamers, the Myst series has found itself struggling to match the success of its counterpart. Myst IV: Revelation marks its second appearance on the Xbox - its first in about two years. So, is Myst IV worth the time, or should it stick to the PC domain?

As the fourth entry in the series, intuition would dictate that prior knowledge of the series is essential to understand just what the hell is going on in this game. Luckily, it really doesn’t matter as Myst IV stands quite well by itself. Previous knowledge, however, will help you appreciate a lot of the character development as familiar faces of the first games get their share of the limelight.

Something that threw me for a loop right off the bat was the use of real actors portraying characters in the game. Games that utilize full-motion videos as the main source of interaction haven’t fared well, and thankfully here it works because the actors are set against the computer generated backgrounds. Think Lord of the Rings and you’ll know what I mean. With all the character interaction and dialogue it is positive to note that most of the performances are pretty good, so don’t worry too much about cheesy acting.

Speaking of Lord of the Rings, the world of Myst exudes an odd familiarity of Middle Earth. The backgrounds and environments are finely detailed and do a wonderful job of immersing you in with its subtle shades of brown and blue. They look almost photorealistic. The icing on the cake is that you have a camera with you to take pictures of the places you’ve been. At a glance, this may seem superficial, but it’ll play an important role in remembering where you’ve been; you’ll be doing a lot of backtracking, and you’ll later see why.

Throughout the entire game you never actually see your character, which is why having those pretty backgrounds is all the more important. Though you never see him, the conversations he has with other characters and their reactions to him allows you some insight on the protagonist’s psyche. And while you’ll never outright talk about someone else’s past, a series of journals and diaries spell out how others view their places in the world and their opinions of the world itself.

Your tool of interaction with the world is a hand cursor. With it you can navigate around the screen – tapping on objects, pulling switches and pressing buttons, or opening up drawers and grabbing essential items. And this is the meat of the gameplay. No action in here – it’s a straight up adventure puzzle game. Some of the puzzles seem rather shallow, like Resident Evil fetch quests, but the majority of them will get the gears in your head moving as they sometimes span multiple levels.

The fact that this game is a port from the PC rears its ugliest head in the control scheme. As soon as you start moving the cursor around, you’ll see immediately that a mouse and keyboard were made for Myst IV, which it initially was. The cursor moves a tad slow, which wouldn’t be too bad, but it doesn’t accelerate as you drag it across the screen. What you’re left with is an icon that crawls.

Also, the processing power of a high-end PC graphics card is sorely missed in how well details show up in the screen. The Xbox version runs at a lower quality and resolution than the PC version. This is not to say that the game is ugly – far from it. Normally, it doesn’t hurt, but in a game like this that involves miniscule details, it’s potentially crippling. I honestly was stuck on one puzzle for hours on end all because I couldn’t see the drawer that could be opened. Of course, you can tell what can be manipulated by paying attention to how the hand cursor reacts when it’s near certain things, but combing the entire screen with that slow thing is cumbersome.

Unfortunately, as with all games that involve puzzles, backtracking is essential. This is why taking pictures is somewhat important – to take pictures of places that you think may be important. More often than not, if it looks important, take a picture. At least, the developers instituted a “zip system” that allows you to travel quickly between places, but the fact that a quarter of the game involves backtracking is disheartening.

The idea of having an entire game revolve around just pointing and clicking and solving puzzles may seem overly simplistic to most of you, but ask any Myst fan or fans of old PC games like King’s Quest and they will tell you otherwise. Though it has been awhile since I last played a game like this, there’s nothing more satisfying than solving a long, winding head-scratcher of a puzzle. What you’ll find in Myst IV is a port of a great PC game that falls just short of living up to the name it bears. I recommend it for those of you who are looking for a thinking man’s adventure game, or have no means to play it on a PC. If you can, get that version instead.

Simple, but the puzzles are great – most of the time.

The backgrounds are beautiful, but the fact that they can hinder puzzle solving is crippling.

Not all that memorable, but fits the moods and themes of the story.

If your idea of fun involves head-scratching puzzles, you’ll love this.

Every playthrough could be different, but there isn’t any incentive for repeat playings.
