The video is entirely CGI, doesn't give us much new information about the plot, but looks pretty enough. There will come a point in the future where I'm not going to let these non-gameplay trailers slide by without a scolding, but that day hasn't arrived yet.

What is new, or new to me at least, is that the game will feature squad commanding, perhaps conquering too.

There have been rumors about another attempt at a Command & Conquer First-Person-Shooter (Westwood's C&C Renegade being an ugly mess). Electronic Arts (who now own the C&C license after gobbling up Westwood) has just officially confirmed those rumors by announcing Tiberium.

Note that it's not "Command & Conquer: Tiberium."

EA has really been trying to push the concept of Tiberium forward since they took over Command & Conquer, making it practically the entire plot point of C&C 3: Tiberium Wars. The production team even hired a group of MIT scientists to come up with the physical, geological, and biochemical inner workings for the fictitious green crystals. (Short version: nasty stuff.)

It seems that the forthcoming FPS is more concerned with the Tiberium than with Command & Conquer. The press release barely mentions C&C, and the sparse web page doesn't even elude to it. It could be that the shiny rocks will be the only similarity between the FPS game and its RTS step-mother.

Tiberium is slated for a fall 2008 release. I can't figure out which EA studio is actually developing the game.

Electronic Arts has released a new PC patch today for Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. The patch will update your copy to v1.09 and comes in at a whopping 263mb. Click on the read more for full list of fixes.

Bug Fixes

* Fixed an error that sometimes caused players to unexpectedly
type-select multiple unit types at once due to an interface lag when
rapidly switching between unit types during online play.
* Structures now lose Ground Control radius as soon as they are
destroyed. Previously they continued providing Ground Control for
several seconds while their husks remained onscreen.
* Fixed an error that caused some infantry units to continue
approaching their targets while firing, rather than firing while
standing at their maximum range.
* Fixed an error that caused upgraded Power Plants and Reactors
to continue providing power for several seconds after being destroyed.
* Fixed an error that allowed players to detect enemy structures through the shroud by using the Set Rally Point marker.
* Fixed an error that caused computer-controlled players with the
"Turtle" personality to not build base defenses as expected.
* Nod Avatar's flamethrower upgrade now correctly shows a garrison-clearing effect.

Multiplayer Maps

* New: Wrecktropolis
The ongoing conflict between the forces of GDI, the Brotherhood of
Nod, and the Scrin have taken a tremendous toll on the world, as
evidenced by countless ruined husks of cities. Wrecktropolis is one
such example. This is a four-player map available for unranked matches.
* Rebalanced: Barstow Badlands
This map is now slightly larger: There is more buildable area near
players' starting bases, and the chokepoints are not as narrow.
Garrisonable structures should now be symmetrical for both players.
* Rebalanced: Tournament Tower
This map no longer has a third-tier elevation level in the center
of the map, which frees up this area for battle. Expansion Tiberium
fields switched from blue to green. Various objects throughout the map
have been removed to free up room for base building and combat.
* Rebalanced: Pipeline Problems
This map no longer has pipelines near the northern starting
position, to mirror the layout of the southern starting position.
* Rebalanced: Tiberium Gardens III (Kane Edition)
This Kane Edition map no longer has Tiberium fields along the
narrow ridges. New expansion fields have been added to the far side of
each basin containing a player position.

Balance Changes
The following balance changes are intended to make
resource-gathering more strategic and artillery units more viable,
while also further tuning the combat forces to ensure even balance
across all three factions in any combination.

General Balance Changes

* Harvesters: Carrying capacity reduced by 42% to 1400 credits of
green crystals and 2800 credits of blue crystals. Gathering cycle sped
up by 8 seconds. Overall rate of income reduced by approximately 35%.
* GDI MCV, Nod MCV, Scrin Drone Platform: Cost/Build time increased by 40% to 3500/35, health and speed normalized.
* Outposts: Health increased by 5%. This prevents them from being
destroyed by one use of the Nod Shadow Team's Explosive Charges.

GDI Balance Changes

* Grenadier Squad: Range increased by 20%.
* Commando: Suppression time reduced by 70%. This means the
Commando can use his C4 Charges to demolish multiple structures more
quickly.
* Juggernaut: Range increased by 25%.
* Mammoth Tank: Turret turn rate reduced by 66%. This makes the vehicle slightly less effective at quickly changing targets.
* Sonic Emitter: Attack power reduced by 25%. This means the Sonic Emitter can no longer one-shot-kill certain vehicles.

Brotherhood of Nod Balance Changes

* Crane: Health increased by 50%, normalizing its health with that of the GDI Crane and Scrin Foundry.
* Fanatics: Cost/Build time reduced by 13% to 700/7.
* Commando: Suppression time reduced by 70%. This means the
Commando can use her C4 Charges to demolish multiple structures more
quickly.
* Attack Bike: Range increased by 16%.
* Stealth Tank: Attack power increased by 66%.
* Beam Cannon: Range increased by 25%. This does not affect the
Avatar's extra weapon gained from commandeering a Beam Cannon.
* Avatar: Health increased by 25%. Pre-attack delay reduced by 33%. Main weapon's attack power increased by 25%.
* Confessor: Upgrade no longer provides a rate-of-fire bonus to affected infantry squads.
* Tiberium Infusion: Upgrade bonus to infantry squads' health reduced by 60%.
* Catalyst Missile: Support Power cost increased by 33% to 2000.
* Tiberium Vapor Bomb: Support Power cooldown time increased by 25% to 300. Attack power increased by 140%.

Scrin Balance Changes

* Disintegrators: When crushed by enemy vehicles, attack power of explosive revenge attack increased by 30%.
* Seeker: Health reduced by 13%.
* Devastator Warship: Range increased by 20%. Rate of fire reduced
by 200%. Attack power increased by 100%. Scatter radius reduced.
* The Swarm: Support Power can no longer be used directly on top
of infantry and vehicles. Cooldown time increased by 66% to 150. Now
spawns 5 Buzzers instead of 7.
* Phase Field: Support Power no longer affects infantry. Cooldown time reduced by 50% to 180.

Other Changes

* Tuning to Classic Command & Conquer (Left-Click Orders)
mouse interface: Bridges are no longer selected in favor of issuing
move orders. Players can now issue orders on the Radar.
* There is a new Fast-Forward button onscreen while watching Replays or BattleCasts.

Another sequel is on the way for one of gaming's longest-standing franchises, as Electonic Arts officially announced Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars for the PC platform.

Few details were revealed, but EA indicated that we can expect the same fast-paced real-time strategy gameplay we've seen since 1995, when the series began. The game intends to bring a "breakthrough single player campaign that rewards you for your playing style," and we also know that the game will include a built-in VoIP feature, spectator modes, and an integrated clan system.

"Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars combines fast-paced gameplay with new ways to tell a story in an RTS game," said Mike Verdu, Executive Producer at EA Los Angeles, the studio developing the game. "We're building a next generation Command & Conquer game that is true to the spirit of this classic franchise, but is updated with state-of-the-art visuals, added strategic depth, and gameplay innovations that will move the genre forward. I am very excited to be working on this amazing game."

As indicated in the working title, C&C 3's story will pick up where 1999's Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun left off. In 2047, the radioactive alien substance known as Tiberium has spread across the planet, and the Global Defense Initiative is seeking to contain its dangerous effects. But the Brotherhood of NOD, still lead by the maniacal Kain, is trying to take advantage of the resource for its own war-driven purposes.

We also got our hands on the Command & Conquer 3 logo and one high-res art image from the game. Check them out below, and look for more details soon as E3 draws near.
Originally written by Evan Lahti

Set to launch tomorrow in Japan, we've got an arsenal of images from Nintendo's Star Fox Command, the latest update to the series headed for the Nintendo DS. The game is said to feature 10 playable pilots, including Fox, Falco, Krystal, Slippy, Wolf, and Leon, and each of the characters' ships will carry different attributes to make them more effective in different roles. Check out the images below, and await the North American launch of Star Fox Command later this month.

GH Review: Field Commander (PSP)

Field Commander is a real-time strategy game for the PSP.
With the critical acclaim that the Advance Wars series has found on Nintendo’s
handheld, it was only a matter of time before the PSP would find a RTS of its
own. With its deep gameplay and great number of modes, it looks like a solid
addition to the PSP library.

Field Commander plays like your standard RTS. You have a
selection of units and army types that require a factory and money, a variety
of personalities amongst the number of generals, and different goals and ways
to attain them in trying to beat a level. Sounds like your run-of-the-mill
genre game and for the most part you’d be right; however the modes available
are not only plentiful, but also deep and worth investing some time in.

Now, I haven’t played many RTS games, so I had to start off
with the tutorial mode. The basics are taught to you in the land tutorial and
then more advanced techniques are taught while learning the ropes in the two other
kinds of tactical attacks – air and sea. It does a good job of gradually
getting newcomers into the game and I felt confident enough to tackle the meat
of the single-player mode, campaign, after completing the three.

In campaign mode, there are about 30 unique missions
available, which follow a generally linear progression. Mission
goals are thankfully varied well, ranging from total annihilation to capturing
the enemy headquarters to search-and-rescue missions. As you get further into
this mode, you’ll unlock the different division types for your own disposal.
What makes this mode even better is how well it immerses you.

All of the generals are provided with voices, so hearing
your next objective or clue on how to take advantage of a situation is a nice
added touch. Hearing the enemy generals talk junk is downright hilarious,
especially when you follow it with a barrage of tank shells at his
headquarters. Trust me, he won’t be talking smack again until after you’ve
completed the mission.

Once you’ve had your fill on the single-player campaign,
you’ll be happy to know that Field Commander features a robust multiplayer
online component; it even includes one that allows you to play these lengthy
chess matches at your own pace.

The first type of multiplayer mode is hot swap where two
players take turns using the same PSP unit. There’s also ad hoc support, but
the majority of fans will want to take advantage of the infrastructure support.
Being able to face off against another human commander is always a greater
feeling than playing against a computer AI that has some limitations. Lastly,
there’s transmission mode. In this multiplayer mode, you can face off against
an opponent while they’re not present. Instead, each player’s moves are sent to
a server. Once the opposing player has ended his turn, you’ll receive a
notification, a little like e-mail, letting you know that it’s your turn. These
kinds of matches could theoretically extend for hours or even days if one of
the players doesn’t respond for a long period of time. However, being able to
play a match at a pace that’s not dictated by battery life or one’s own busy
schedule is a welcome addition.

The gameplay itself is as rich as its selection. The type of
vehicles and troops is varied, but nothing out of the ordinary. You have your
grunts, your spec ops, light tanks, heavy tanks, gun ships, transport vehicles,
etc. However, there are some interesting quirks that give FC its own unique
feel. First off, RTS vets can appreciate the fact that land units can share the
same square as an air unit. Finally, a gameplay mechanic that actually makes
sense. The other interesting quirk is the ability to destroy terrain. A dense
forest hindering your ability to send troops towards a certain point? Then
destroy it with some heavy artillery to clear a path for your grunties. The
attack terrain strategy is not only used to provide a positional advantage, but
also as a way to hinder the enemy’s finances. Scattered on the maps are dense
cities, which provide the armies with money to build units. However, attacking
a city will reduce its ability to produce funds and thus put a damper on your
opponent’s cash flow.

FC also features division powers. A bar in the upper left
fills after every turn and when it reaches a certain point you can have HQ
command the division to use its unique ability. Division powers range from
restoring health to doubling movement areas to increasing strength - depending
on who you choose to bring in of course. It adds another great element to the
already deep RTS gameplay.

After the great job with the audio, the visuals,
surprisingly, are the weakest part of Field Commander’s presentation. That’s
not to say that they’re terrible, but they aren’t all that polished either,
especially during the up-close action sequences. And from farther out, it’s a little difficult
to distinguish different units of similar ilk without hovering your icon over
them to read the specifics. The environments are decent enough.

Speaking of environments, they are all relatively small. I
don’t think I ran into a stage larger than 20 x 20 squares. It actually makes
some missions seem easier than they should be because you don’t have to worry
too much about positioning. You’ll be close to the enemy front lines in less
than 3 turns, all without bothering to alter the terrain for shortcuts.
However, the saving grace is that it shortens the playtime of other missions
that seem like they're drawn out because you need to chase a unit and there’s
just too much space for them to dawdle in.

Lastly, the enemy can get, well, a bit stupid at times. It’s
not like they’ll commit some idiotic mistake in strategy. What they like to do
is waste their money by constantly making small cheap units, like grunts and
spec ops, on every turn rather than saving up their cash for the larger harder
hitting units. This will sometimes make the armies a bit lopsided especially if
you build up your own army intelligently and efficiently. There were a number
of times when I had three tanks and two gunships confronted by a line of seven
foot soldiers. They may have had the numbers, but I definitely had the power to
eliminate them in two turns or less. That said, at least there are many avenues
with which to link up to other players that could eliminate that problem.

Field Commander is definitely worth a look from any RTS
PSP-owning fan. The gameplay is rich enough and the number of options, which
includes a multitude of multiplayer modes, is deep enough to keep gamers coming
back for more. And even if you aren’t a big RTS fan, like myself, there’s
enough here to make you want to become one.

Rock solid and very deep and engaging.

Not the greatest looking game, but it’s not bad either.

Doesn’t have the best voice acting, but it's great that almost all of the dialogue is spoken.

If you love real-time strategy games, this is a blast.

Lots of multiplayer options plus online support gives FC more life after campaign is done.

GH Preview: Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars (PC)

This preview was originally published on Gaming Horizon, GameBump's predecessor. Its format does not match our own but we support its content.

Today at E3 2006 I was given a look at the upcoming and (personally) long-awaited addition to the Command & Conquer series. Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars is the first C&C game in over six years to continue the original "Tiberium" franchise (which was interrupted by the Red Alert series and, more recently, Generals).

When Westwood was absorbed by Electronic Arts, we hardcore C&C fans started biting our nails in anxiety that EA might either water down the franchise with endless, pointless sequels, or get rid of everything that made C&C great and make it just another real-time strategy game. Today I was gladly relieved of my fears. The team making C&C3 is very, very dedicated to the original storyline and cannot stress enough how important it is for them that they not only adhere to the series, but add to it as well.

For the uninitiated, Command & Conquer was considerably the first RTS game ever produced (though technically the second). The basic storyline was that the world was split into two factions, a union of democratic forces known as the Global Defense Initiative and a cultish organization called Brotherhood of Nod, and coincidentally around the same time a strange substance arrived on earth: Tiberium, a crystal-ore type material that grows from the ground and absorbs all the precious metals and resources from the ground (like gold or oil).

At the time, this was just a clever way to compensate for the fact that RTS, base-building games need some sort of collectable and renewable resource to drive the balance of the game. Players needed a way to collect money, so they thought up a fancy material that would grow from the ground and be very valuable.

Since then, and most especially with this upcoming sequel, the role of Tiberium is made much more prevalent. As is the case now with our natural resources, geopolitics become involved and a war is fought between the GDI, who want to collect the Tiberium to power towns, and the Nod, who follow the idealist zealot Kane, who incites passion amongst developing countries in the belief that the Tiberium is a gift to mankind and should be preserved. What was once a concocted resource for gathering in the game series has evolved into the subject of a world struggle. This kind of thought by the development team is very exciting.

This high concept isn't the only exciting thing. While the game has only been in actual development for a short time, the graphics in the demonstration mission were just completely remarkable. Tanks leave tracks in the sand and kick up dust as they travel, and the dust lingers and interacts with the wind. Hover-jets (called Orcas, which should be familiar to fans) create wind trails and disrupt the sand or water below them dynamically; water that looks absolutely perfect to begin with. Particle effects and light bloom are used stunningly well, which became quite clear when some vehicles were used to shoot down some buildings. As the buildings took fire, the walls and mortar started to crumble away in pieces as dust and debris started to fill the air around it. Once the buildings were completely destroyed, they toppled effortlessly and spewed even more debris around.

The production leader said that they've been working hard to make the AI work equally well for both "schools" of RTS players. Some players like to build an attacking force quickly and rush their opponents, while others like to "turtle" - that is, spend time building a huge base with powerful defenses, and then engage the enemy's base with a full force. Most RTS games' AI enemies work well with only one of those schools, but C&C3's AI can automatically adjust to match the player's style, or for in skirmish modes, the player can set what type of "player" the AI opponents should be.

Before today I was really worried about the recently announced Command & Conquer sequel. Now, I'm very excited to get this game in my hands and play it to death. RTS fans, especially long-time Command & Conquer fans, should be just as excited as I am.

GH Review: Commandos Strike Force (PS2)

This review was originally published on Gaming Horizon, GameBump's predecessor. Its format does not match our own but we support its content. It was written by Eric Dayday.

Commandos is one of Eidos’ longer running series, dating
back to the original PlayStation days. However, fans of those titles may be
disappointed to find that Commandos Strike Force is a far departure from that
interesting action-RTS hybrid the older ones used to be. Instead, it’s now just
a cookie cutter WWII-era first person shooter. Does it do anything to stand out
against the sea of other WWII shooters?

Strike Force is set up in missions, each with their own
primary and secondary objectives. Sounds par for the course, and it is, but
they shake things up by giving you not only the freedom to accomplish your
goals in any manner you see fit, there’s also the option to attack them as one
of three characters. Each of the characters has a different skill set so it’ll
alter how you play a mission, thus giving you a reason to play through the
levels more than once. It’s a reason, but there are other reasons not to, which
I’ll discuss later.

The three characters you can control are separated into
three different types – a sniper, a beret, and a spy. As the sniper you’ll, of
course, have your requisite long range sniper rifle as well as a set of
throwing knives with which to silently kill nearby enemies. And you can always
walk over a body to retrieve the knife you just threw. The beret plays like
your standard foot soldier – proficient with a variety of guns. The spy
presents the most interesting way to infiltrate an enemy camp as he is capable
of donning enemy clothing. By doing so, you can sneak in and walk amongst the
enemy like one of their own. However, catch the peeking eye of a high-ranking
official and you can say goodbye to your cover.

The variety in which you can approach a mission adds tons of
replay to Commandos. Unfortunately, it does a lot of other things wrong that
will turn some off from playing through them all again.

Where to start – how about the graphics? Commandos Strike
Force is one ugly duckling. It looks more like a PS1.5 game, or at least a
first generation PS2 title at best. We’re in the waning period of the PS2’s
lifetime and we get stuck with something that looks like this. A good example is
the foliage that’s spread through the majority of the levels. I approached one
and it was a pixilated 2D bush. I could go right up to it and see that it lacks
depth. That’s the worst of it thankfully. The character models look decent,
though they tend to walk in very unnatural ways. They seem robotic at times.

The voice acting is, for the most part, one of Commandos’
strong points. All of the characters sound lively and, contrary to how some are
animated, natural. The only problems lie in their repetitiveness and bad
synchronization. The controlled character will talk to himself during missions,
which I find to be a nice addition as it draws the player into the situation.
But, he’ll tend to repeat the same things when performing the same action, such
as crouching to hide from a patrolling guard, or taunting a soldier he just
stealth killed.

The bad synchronization plays a heavy part in the cutscenes.
The voices and the lips don’t match up well at all. In the worst case scenario,
sometimes the lips on the speaking character will continue to move several
seconds after the dialogue clip had already ended. This turns some of the
scenes into the equivalent of a badly dubbed 70s kung fu flick.

Another bothersome thing is the moronic AI. I didn’t like
the fact that crouching makes you virtually invisible to a close range enemy
the majority of the time. Also, since dead bodies disappear after a few
moments, it ruins the realism that Strike Force intended to evoke. If there’s a
dead body lying around in the open, someone is bound to notice and sound the
alert. But no, all and any evidence that you sliced a Nazi throat just vanishes
into thin air.

Adding to the moronic AI is the fact that the Nazi soldiers
have some really bad aim. I was once caught in a 6-on-1 disadvantage and
managed to escape with minimal damage. It’s like the Stormtrooper effect all
over again. Thankfully, there are multiple difficulty settings, and while the
hardest doesn’t quite make the enemies smart, they’re smart enough to at least
pose a threat. The downside to that is now portions of the game become
trial-and-error. In others words, it’s “what happens if I do this? Ok I now
know not to do that, so let’s do this”. And don’t sweat having to reload an old
save that’s hours back because you can save anywhere at anytime.

Lastly, there’s a serviceable online multiplayer mode. I say
serviceable because while it functions well enough, there just isn’t anyone out
there playing it. And those that do suffer from occasional bouts of lag and
stuttering frame rates. Commandos offers your standard deathmatch and team
deathmatch mode, but the third and most interesting of them is sabotage.

The goal in sabotage is to decipher the other team’s 6-digit
code. Doing so awards your team points. The coolest part about it all is how
you find the code. Each team has at least one spy who can interrogate fallen
enemy players. Some will give up just one digit while others may give you
three, depending on who it is you’ve interrogated. It’s a very fun mode and one
I’d like to see implemented in other multiplayer FPS’. It’s a shame that such
an awesome mechanic isn’t being experienced by more players.

Commandos Strike Force has some good points of its own
merit, but when the genre is already flooded with so many other games that do
it better, it has to offer more than what we’re given here. Unfortunately,
because of that, it’s just another WWII-era first-person shooter.

The three different skill sets for the characters offers a nice change of pace.

We shouldn’t be seeing first-gen PS2 graphics this late in its lifetime.

The voice acting is good, but it’s repetitive and badly synched.

Different styles are great and sabotage is awesome, but nothing outside of that is engrossing.

Reasons to play single-campaigns exist, but some problems will turn you off from it. Ok online.

Strategy titles have been all but missing from the
PlayStation Portable since its launch last year. Meanwhile the competition in Nintendo
has a pretty secure handle on the genre. But, Sony is planning to get their
foot in the door with the upcoming military turn-based strategy game Field
Commander. In the game, players will take on the title role of a field
commander whose goal is to defend the world from evil terrorist organizations
that are looking to dominate the globe and incite violence worldwide.

raphically the game looks realistic and stunning with full 3D, detailed
terrain and impressive visual effects. Particle effects for explosions, snow,
rain and more are exceptionally done particularly for a portable title. The
audio is also very solid too since the various sounds of war really bring the
whole experience to life.

Overall Field Commander plays like most other turn-based
strategy titles. The game gives you the ability to move units one by one as
well as lay mines, attack terrain and take over cities. Of course the ultimate
goal in the game is to either capture the enemy headquarters or destroy all
their units.

Commander will feature 15 unit types broken down by their
movement ability including wheeled, treaded, infantry and others. The units
also have specialty abilities like special ops, snipers, grunts, scouts,
stealth fighters, tanks, submarines, battleships and more. Just like in any
other tactics game you’ll have to keep a close eye on your various units’
health, fuel, and ammo supplies when considering sending them up against
certain enemies.

To make the game even more interesting, all the unit types
will have special division powers that can be utilized at certain points in the
mission. There is one other limited strategy that can be utilized at points in
the game called offboard fire. This is featured in certain buildings during a
mission and gives players the ability to do large area-of-effect smart-bomb
attacks.

Field Commander will allow gamers to battle over 30 missions
in the single-player campaign mode. Beyond the single-player experience, gamers
will have plenty more to keep them busy including various multiplayer options through
ad hoc, infrastructure, hot swap which means being able to play on one PSP and
HQ mode which is a play-by-email game. Sony plans to feature stat tracking,
matchmaking and even create your own missions that you’ll be able to upload
online.

Field Commander is shaping up nicely and looks to be a solid
strategy title for the PlayStation Portable. The only problem that remains for
the title is its widespread appeal as tactics titles tend to be a hard sell for
a broader audience. Even so, Commander looks to give strategy fans all they can
handle when it releases in May with an impressive single-player campaign and a
diverse and very fulfilling multiplayer and online experience that should provide
gamers plenty of enjoyment for months to come.
