The biggest new feature clearly is the ability to blow buildings apart -- and visuals are spectacular, but the game features more than just that. For once, it features an entertaining single-player experience with a meaningful storyline. Of course, it brings a quality online experience as well to keep you playing for some time.

Click here for an explanation of our review and scoring format.

War games are so common today that in order to stand out from the crowd, the game really has to do something different. Battlefield: Bad Company may not revolutionize the genre by any means, but it does add some nice improvements to the next-generation experience to make it fun and interesting.

Easily the biggest new improvement to the series is the impressive visuals. Worth noting is that it is in first-person. Running through the levels, your player shakes and vibrates. The visuals of guns and various weapons on screen are very realistic.

Those are all well and good, but what really catches your eye the most is the incredible detail of the environments with fires, special effects and more. Even more notable than that are the destructible environments, explosions look incredibly real with chunks of rubble exploding around you. Hiding in a building is far from safe anymore, and can be a bit nerve-racking, as a tank can blow the roof off, literally.

The game features more than just visuals though. The sound is very good with impressive war sounds, the guns are very realistic and explosions are incredible too. The musical score works with the various environments and moods and the single-player experience actually has some good dialogue with character.

Did I do that?

Speaking of the single-player experience, it puts you in the role of the new player in Bad Company. A group of problem soldiers who take on the worst of assignments in order to score money in the form of gold bars. Although you’re not able to command your teammates, the action is exciting and the missions are interesting. The game features a number of weapons to play with as well as explosives and health injectors to gain life. There are side goals as well as numerous vehicles including helicopters, boats, trucks and more in the seven-level offline campaign.

As for the control scheme, it’s very user friendly with the use of the triggers and sticks. If you’ve played a first-person shooter before it will take little time to adjust. The only difficulty was flying helicopters, which takes some getting used to.

Not to be forgotten from any Battlefield experience is the online component which is once again solid. It features up to 24 players per map, all vehicles in the single-player mode including tanks, jeeps, boats, helicopters and hummers, a variety of weapons including turrets, cannons and rockets on the field as well as five arm sets to choose from, each group features unlockable bonuses too. While the conquest mode that Battlefield is known for isn’t featured yet, the online option is solid nonetheless.
The first three games include Battlestations: Midway, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, and 2K's ever-popular Bioshock.

It's an interesting move, with Xbox 360 sales lagging behind... everything else (hard to top those Nintendo DS's). It's possible that offering western-style games to Japanese gamers via the 360 might boost unit sales, but it's equally possible that the audience doesn't give a damn. But if Bioshock, one of 2007's premier titles in the west, can't move 360s over there, then what can?

In Asian gaming markets like Korea and, to a lesser extent, Japan, there is an entirely distinct business model for video game releasing that's never been tried here in the US at any broad scale or with any success: free games, supported by ads and micro-transactions.

Certain games, like EA's FIFA and a few titles from NC Soft are released for free to download in Korea but give players the option to purchase in-game objects and upgrades. EA's FIFA, for instance, lets you pay a few bucks for customized jersies as well as limited upgrades to a player's stats. Most people just play with what they can get for free, but enough people buy the extras that, combined with revenue from ads placed inside the games (be it actually within gameplay itself or just ads that appear within the interface) for the game to turn a profit.

EA's new chief executive, John Riccitiello, and Gerhard Florin, EA's executive vice president, aim to bring that model to the US starting with a brand new game just announced: Battlefield Heroes.

Not to be confused with Medal of Honor: Heroes, Company of Heroes, Bionacle Heroes, Sonic Heroes, City of Heroes, Heroes of the Pacific, Heroes of Might and Magic, or the TV show Heroes, Battlefield Heroes is a "dumbed-down", cartooned-up entry to the Battlefield franchise aimed at slightly more casual gamers.

“The existing Battlefield games are fairly deep; you have to be pretty good or you’ll die pretty quick,” Gerhard Florin told the New York Times. “Now we’ve toned down the difficulty, shortened each game session to 10 or 15 minutes and made the visual style more cartoony.”

He says that if this is a success, other EA library titles could be given the ad-supported treatment. Worth noting is that these are only PC titles we're talking about here, there's been no mention of applying this model to the console realm.

Here's to goofing off at work and not having to pay for it.

GH Review: Battlestations: Midway (360)

This review was originally published on Gaming Horizon, GameBump's predecessor. Its format does not match our own but we support its content. It was written by Brian Mohr.

World War II games come and go, but Eidos Interactive has
decided to go into a new direction with their latest work, Battlestations:
Midway. The game combines strategy and action to fulfill fans of both genres.
In the game, players go through a variety of battles across the Pacific Theater
from Pearl Harbor to the Battle of Midway. The
question is: does Eidos pull off the unique World War II title or is it just
another has-been?

Battlestations: Midway is unique in that it allows you to
play in a variety of fighting styles through the same broader storyline. In the
game, players are given the opportunity to command submarines, fighter planes,
dive bombers, aircraft carriers, cruisers, battleships, destroyers and more.
The full variety featured in the game along with the ability to switch between
various vehicles on the fly makes Midway an interesting play.

Overall the game features 60 vehicles to man and all of them
are very different and, most importantly, feel differently. One nice touch is that the developers
nailed the controls; whether steering planes, boats or submarines, all are very
different. For example, the PT boats and destroyers are fast and move well in
the water, while carriers are difficult to turn and slow. The controls for the
action are terrific and just as good as you’d find in a straight World War II
flying game.

That’s only half of what the game features though as there
is a full strategy element in Battlestations too and this is where the game goes
one step further. Players have to make decisions and command waves of forces on
the fly and this creates a strategy to the entire experience. You’ll take
control of a tactical map where you’ll direct ships and planes into and out of
battle. Strategy goes beyond just telling forces what to do though as there’s a
full micromanagement option in the game where you’ll have to delve into
controlling weapons, damage and more. This game goes beyond just straight
action and simple strategy which for some is a good thing while others it may be
a downside. The nice aspect of this is that the game gives you free reign to
control everything that happens on-screen.

With all the strategy and vehicles at hand, thankfully
Midway features a solid tutorial to walk you through every aspect of the vehicles
and weaponry at your disposal. That was important to include as the controls
for each vehicle takes some getting used to, but after taking on various plane,
ship and sub challenges you should quickly become a pro. It goes one step
further though as the tutorials will delve deeper by teaching players how to
attack specific enemies and direct squads.

If that’s not enough, Battlestations Midway features a full
online mode too. There’s a wide variety of maps available. Most feature a
combination of planes and ships, although some are focused specifically on
certain vehicles. Although bare bones, online is pretty engaging and allows up
to eight players to go at it at once.

While Midway has some solid merits, the game features major
issues too. One such problem is the dialogue and voice-acting in the game. The
single-player storyline is poorly executed and more often than not the
voice-acting doesn’t sync up with the action on-screen. In fact, I felt the
voice-acting didn’t really even match up well with the characters in the
storyline. Even worse than that is the constant repetition from players in battles.

I can say that the sound isn’t all bad though. The score is
relatively good and features a fair amount of drama that varies depending on
whether you’re fighting as the Japanese or Americans. The sound effects are
also decent and feature explosions, gun fire, engine sounds and more. All of
these make the battle experience a little bit more memorable. Despite those
nice facts, the voice-acting really hurts the sound in this game.

On top of that, the graphics aren’t the most desirable.
There is a nice amount of detail including men walking around on decks of ships,
but the game doesn’t utilize the Xbox 360’s power. Sometimes the water, sun and
sky look amazing, but others it is far from it and the textures are lifeless.
Thankfully, the cutscenes at least look good and there is no slowdown
whatsoever.

Battlestations Midway does some good things, most notably
combining solid World War II action with full real-time strategy. This
combination is interesting and unique, although it still doesn’t get you to
overlook the mediocre graphics and sound which are simply sub par.
Nevertheless, if you’re a war fan or love strategy titles, Battlestations
Midway is definitely worth a spin. The only problem is that it’s more than
likely going to be a hit only for hardcore gamers.

The controls are complicated, but functional. The game combines strategy and action well.

A developer for portable platforms since 1998, below are new screenshots and character model art from Torus Games' web-slinging action title Spider-Man: Battle For New York. The game will allow players to suit up into Spidey's familiar red and blue spandex, as well as the Green Goblin's uniform. In the latter case, playing the role of Spider-Man's nemesis will involve an escape from the organization known as S.H.I.E.LD., which would also indicate that the game's story is not tied to the upcoming film to be released in May.

Atlus has announced that it has shipped two of its titles to North American retailers today. The first, Battle B-Daman, is based on the anime of the same name, which will see the launching of its second season on American television in 2006. The game was developed exclusively for the GameBoy Advance, is rated E, and will be followed by Battle B-Daman: Fire Spirits! on September 26.

Yamato Delgado dreams of playing B-Daman, the ancient sport of the B-DaWorld—and his dream comes true when he's chosen to wield Cobalt Blade, the most powerful B-Daman ever. Yamato must use Cobalt Blade to compete in B-Daman tournaments and defeat the evil B-Daplayers of the Shadow Alliance, who will stop at nothing to take over the B-DaWorld. Yamato will also meet characters both familiar and unknown on his journeys, including the warm-hearted Alan and the sinister-looking Goblin. Only a few have what it takes to become a B-Daplayer; will Yamato become the B-Dachampion?

The second Atlus title to ship to North American retailers today is Summon Night: Swordcraft Story for the GameBoy Advance, marking the first game in the popular RPG franchise to see a stateside release. The title was developed by Banpresto and will be followed by Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 2 on October 3.

Welcome to the strange world of Lyndbaum: a sacred land linked to four magical dimensions, from which summoners can call forth spirits called Guardian Beasts to do their bidding. Wystern is one of Lyndbaum's largest cities, often called the City of Swords because of its large population of Craftknights, who use the strength of Guardian Beasts to forge powerful weapons.

A great tournament has begun in Wystern, a series of battles that will determine the next of Wystern's seven Craftlords, who act as the city's guardians and councillors. But the tournament features an unusual rule that has everyone in Wystern abuzz: only Craftknight apprentices under the age of 18 are allowed to enter.

One of the tournament's contestants is the child of Shintetsu, a legendary Craftlord who met a mysterious fate three years earlier. The child wants nothing more than to win the tournament and uphold Shintetsu's legacy—but the tournament is only the beginning of a saga that will lead to the uncovering of Wystern's darkest secret...

GH Preview: The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-Earth II (PC)

This preview was originally published on Gaming Horizon, GameBump's predecessor. Its format does not match our own but we support its content. It was written by Sean Kearney.

It has been nearly two years since the last of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy of films was still in theaters, but Middle-earth fans can be comforted by the fact that EA has continued to produce videogames using its Lord of the Rings license. Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II is the sequel to last year’s hit real-time strategy game, using characters and maps from the Lord of the Rings universe, and EALA has jam packed the game with enough extras to lure back fans of the original title and hopefully attract some new fans, too.

One of the interesting things about the setting of Middle-earth II is that it is neither a sequel nor a prequel, as the events of the game actually take place at the same time as the original, just in a geographically different location than the events of the first title. Middle-earth 2 takes place north of the events of the original game, in lands filled with Elven and Dwarven armies.

Middle-earth 2 allows you to choose between two different types of story-based campaigns, either the good campaign or evil campaign. Whether you fight as good or evil, each campaign offers eight unique missions that take you to various locations in Middle-earth. Although some locations appear in both the good and evil scenarios, others, such as Dul Guldur and the Shire, are exclusive to only one campaign.

In addition to the good and evil campaigns, Battle for Middle-earth II features the meta game, War of the Ring, which is a turn-based strategy game in the style of the classic board game “Risk”. In War of the Ring mode, you fight as either a good or evil force, trying to conquer all of Middle-earth by landing on unclaimed and claiming them for your army. If you want to claim a territory that another army has already claimed, a fight is initiated, and you are given the choice to either carry out the battle in the style of the traditional game, or have the computer resolve the battle automatically.

A very interesting element of The Battle for Middle-earth II is the ability to take your War of the Ring game online, and go head to head against an opponent in a multiplayer version of the game. Because conquering all of Middle-earth can take some time, the multiplayer version of War of the Ring mode allows you to save your online games and continue them over a period of time, something which proves to be much more effective than the old-school Risk style of game saves, which involved carefully moving the board into a lone corner of the room and making sure that no one touched it for a month.

There are three new factions in Middle-earth II, two good races and one evil one. Dwarves, one of the good races, are exceptional at creating defenses, whereas the Elves, the other new good race, make up for lacking defensive abilities with their speed and stealth abilities. On the evil side, the Goblins, the new evil race, are the quickest faction in the game. Along with the new factions, The Battle for Middle-earth II features 17 new heroes, including the evil Sauron as well as Legolas’ father, Thrandull.

Another added feature in The Battle for Middle-earth II is the ability to create your own hero. The create-a-hero feature allows you to construct customized units that can be used in both the War of the Ring campaign as well as in the multiplayer and skirmish games. You are able to not only select your avatar’s race and class, but also to modify his appearance by outfitting him with various different weapons, armor, and clothing, and are able to compliment his looks by assigning attribute points as well as various powers specific to his class.

As with many games, The Battle for Middle-earth II will be available in a special collector’s edition. For an MSRP of $59.99, the collector’s edition of BFME II comes packed with a bonus DVD containing numerous video clips and interviews discussing the making of the game, ranging from motion capture to animation. Also included in the DVD is a collection of all of the cinematics featured in the game, as well as the full music score and an art gallery. The DVD also features some in-game content only available with the special edition, including an all- new unit along with exclusive maps, like Weathertop and Argonath.

With loads of new features including new factions, heroes, and lands, as well as the ability to create your own hero, EALA’s The Lord of The Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II looks very promising for both fans of the original game as well as newcomers to the series. The story-based missions in the two single-player campaigns, as well as the ability to play out the War of the Ring online sound very enticing and could prove to be two of the main offerings that attract Lord of the Rings fans and RTS fans alike. Stay tuned to Gaming Horizon for more information about this anticipated LOTR title, as the game launches on February 28.

When Battlefield 1942 came out a few years ago, many people jumped on the bandwagon and played the heck out of it. Soon after its release, people started to hold LAN parties for the title because it was such a great game. Just imagine 32 or 64 players on one map at the same time. Electronic Arts then released Battlefield Vietnam, which is pretty much the same thing but with a Vietnam theme. Now we have Battlefield 2, which takes both of those titles’ great atmospheres and revamps them with better controls, insane visuals, and more things to blow up!

Battlefield 2 is a huge step up from Battlefield 1942. There weren’t as many vehicles or large maps in its predecessor, but Battlefield 2 features numerous vehicles and incredibly large maps. Another thing was that you had to use Team Speak or any other third-party software to talk to your friends within the game. It was quite a hassle, because you had to go to the software’s website and download the program/s and then install the package. This time, Digital Illusions decided to make communication built in. Now you can use that handy microphone and talk to any player on the server.

There are now squads which play a huge role within the game. When you join a squad, you are automatically connected to your squad mates via a VoIP channel. If you have a working microphone, this will come in handy as detailed above. The squad leader will use this to give orders because it is important to listen to the leader – he has direct communication to the commander while the rest of the squad mates do not. A cool thing about being in a squad is the fact that whenever you die and the squad leader is still alive, you can spawn from wherever he is located. So you have the action spawn points and the ability to spawn with the leader. If you want to create a squad, you can access the squad screen by pressing the home or caps-lock keys. This will show the squad menu.

There are seven different types of soldiers you can choose from. These include special forces, sniper, assault, support, engineer, medic, and anti-tank. The special forces come armed with silenced pistols and C4 explosives. This class was the best in my opinion due to the precise weaponry and the items that you come packed with. Sniper is pretty much self-explanatory if you have played first-person shooters before. You are suited up in camouflage with a sniper rifle and this time you get claymore mines. The assault class is equipped with the machine gun/grenade launch combo and the smoke grenade. The support class is essential for any team; this is the ammo guy that supplies the ammo to you when you’re low. Engineers can fix every vehicle, weapon, and bridge there is in the game. Medic is also an essential class, because this one can heal you when you’re hurt. And finally the anti-tank class packs a deadly missile launcher that can do some heavy damage to nearby tanks. The engineer, support, and medic classes get extra points for what they specialize in. For example, if you’re in the support class, you will get points for giving ammo to your teammates.

There is a new character development feature for when you play online. Once you log into a server, Battlefield 2 will then track your stats0 throughout the game. This feature will keep track of your kills, deaths, aim, and various other items. Once you log out, you can see how well you compare. If you do well enough, you receive special items such as decals and new weapons.

When we saw the first screenshots of the game a few years back, I was quite amazed with how good it looked. Now that it is out I can say that the game’s environments, vehicles, and characters look simply incredible, however you do need a high-end system to witness all of this. The maps are huge and still comfortable even if you had all 64 players in on the same server, although if you’re playing a game with just eight people, expect yourself to be playing for quite awhile.

Now for those who don’t play online, you can now play as if you were playing with real humans. The single-player mode is quite fun. Battlefield 1942 had some “stupid” bots that didn’t know what they were doing. We all knew that and not many people played its single-player portion. Digital Illusions fixed that, thankfully. Battlefield 2 gets it right and we now have smarter bots that are team-coordinated. The commander gives the correct orders and the team actually does it. Very surprising! Hell, I wish the bots were brought into the online mode and replaced some of the humans. One can only hope.

There isn’t much to say about Battlefield 2 in this department. There are a few major gripes such as the irritating server browser. Whenever you start the game, you are first introduced to the game’s browser. This allows you to go online or play in single-player mode. The worst part of the browser is that it freezes up quite often and not to mention the lack of adding in favorite servers. There is also an annoying lag that plagues the browser when we press refresh server list.

Before the game came out, Electronic Arts announced that you would need a pretty kick-ass system to run it. Heck, you can’t even have a GeForce 2 to play this. It kind of sucks because there are tons of gamers out there who had to drop their current graphics cards just to play this. Another issue that totally irked fans was that it takes a year just to go back to the main menu. While you’re in the game, you must press escape to go back to the server browser/options. Well, as soon as you hit escape, a box comes up stating that the menu is loading. Oh c’mon now – since when do you have to wait for options screens to appear in games? All the windows have this sort of lag which slows the gamer down.

Since Battlefield 2 is an online game that requires you to team up with others, you are often joined by people who have no clue what the hell they’re doing. This isn’t the game’s fault, but rather today’s modern gamers who think team killing is the funniest thing in this world. For example, I jump in a helicopter and not knowing what kind of skills the pilot has – I’m immediately heading for a building and this guy has no intention of pulling away. So my choice is to bail or get blown into little pieces. The point is, you will come across this when you first join a server, so don’t be surprised.

Overall, Battlefield 2 is a major improvement over Battlefield 1942. VoIP is finally in the game which makes Team Speak pretty pointless now. The graphics have drastically improved along with smarter AI – to an extent. The maps are massive just like they were in its predecessor. If you want something to play at a LAN and you’re bored of Quake 3, Counter-Strike, or World of Warcraft, then this is your title. This is a great game to play as a group; it’s absolute fun when there are 64 people in a server at once. I suggest you head out to your local videogame retailer and purchase this game (and a new graphics card) today – you won’t be disappointed.

The maps are massive and the new square options are exciting. It’s very fun to play!

Very beautiful. Only drawback is you'll need a high-end system. Expect to shell out some cash

Sounds just like Battlefield 1942 with some new elements. Still very good.

The new vehicles and aircraft are fun to control. Newbie helicopter pilots annoy me.

Online play is where it's at. This will keep you busy for months.

This preview was originally published on Gaming Horizon, GameBump's predecessor. Its format does not match our own but we support its content.

The Battlefield titles have historically been some of the most impressive PC shooters on the market for both a single-player and online experience. In preparing a modernized version of the game for consoles, Electronic Arts pulled out all the stops to give console fans an impressive online multiplayer experience. The game gives you up to 70 weapons and 30 vehicles in 24 player online action.

Given we only got our hands on one online level, I’m very impressed with what you can do and I can’t seem to put the game down. The level is a capture-the-flag style mission that you can play for 20 minutes. The basic idea is that both teams start out with approximately 450 points and every kill and control of zones deducts points from the other team.

The mission we saw starts you off as either terrorists or American troops in the country. The terrorists have two helicopters and Jeeps at their disposal, while the Americans have tanks and hummers. The vehicles are definitely necessary considering the levels are very expansive. You can even jump out from the helicopters and parachute to locations while shooting your way to the ground. The vehicles are heavily armored, but can be blown up with the proper weaponry. You can also get teams of players to man vehicles so someone shoots the turret while another drives – a lethal combination.

One drawback is that the flags do take awhile to take control of, but with the help of your teammates you can quickly get them up faster. Both teams start out far from the desolate city where a handful of buildings are available for players to run around in and battle it out for the crucial flags on the map. With the fact that the maps are so large, thankfully there are places to renew your equipment and health to keep you going. Maps also include an air-strike location that comes available ever so often during the game. This can cause you to take out a whole portion of the board and find out where your enemies are on the battlefield and destroy them.

Most important in any shooter is the weapon arsenal. In Battlefield 2, players are given six types of soldiers to play with, including assault, sniper and engineer. Each one has a combination of weapons that you can choose to use including various pistols, rifles, grenades, other military equipment, and my personal favorites – a grenade launcher and some C4.

Finally, the graphics and sound are very impressive as explosions look and feel real especially during an air-strike. Things blow up around you and shots ring out everywhere, making it feel like you’re right in the action. The buildings, vehicles and players are all impressively modeled and have a lot of detail. The characters and vehicles move realistically and definitely add to the experience.

Overall, I was very impressed with the one-level demo as it features an array of options and replay value. The weapons and vehicles certainly have their own feel and offer players many different ways to go about taking out the competition. Even though this is a one-level, online demo, I can’t seem to put it down and I’m sure that I’ll be playing it right up until the release of Battlefield 2 in November.
