A 12-year-old boy and his sister are walking through the woods populated by one or more flocks of Moosen, when suddenly one enraged Møøse attacks the pair. Thinking quickly, Hans Jørgen Olsen (the boy), screamed at the feral beast to distract it from his sister, then dropped to the ground and played dead.

"Just like you learn at level 30 in World of Warcraft," quoth the young Norwegian.

You might say this is evidence of video games' positive effect on children, but we've received word that the Moose in question began his enraged spree of violence after playing twelve hours of GTA.

Beginning this Sunday, July 23, at Toys 'R' Us stores in North America, fans of Nintendo's popular DS title Animal Crossing: Wild World can take part in a free promotion that allows them to connect to Nintendo DS download stations to receive six virtual "gifts." The Mario-themed items, not present in the game otherwise, are: a 1-up mushroom, star, fire bar, goal flag, question box and pipe.
Each can be used to decorate the inside of the player's house, finally helping us complete that "video-game themed" living room we've been working on. And even if you don't plan on using the items within your home, we're guessing they'll net you a good number of bells at Nook's shop. "Free Download Week" at Toys 'R' Us runs until July 29.

GH Preview: Animal Crossing: Wild World (DS)

This preview was originally published on Gaming Horizon, GameBump's predecessor. Its format does not match our own but we support its content. It was written by Aaron Thomas.

Say what you will about Nintendo’s business practices, but one thing that can never be called into question is their ability to take a simple, seemingly quirky concept and turn it into an enjoyable and popular game. One game that exemplifies this ability is Animal Crossing, where you play at your own pace, collect knick knacks, visit your neighbors, and generally just do whatever the heck you want. Released on the Nintendo 64 in Japan and the GameCube in the US, Animal Crossing is poised to return later this year on the Nintendo DS.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Animal Crossing concept, it’s actually quite simple – do whatever you want. To start the game, you move into village, buy a small house and then collect or buy items, talk to neighbors, go fishing, catch bugs, dig up treasure or hang out with human friends. Time and seasons pass as they do in the real world, so you’ll need to play during the day as well as night to experience everything the game has to offer. Special events occur on holidays, and you can collect rare items, or simply witness special guests if you’re playing at the right time.

Many of your favorite characters from the original Animal Crossing return, including K.K. Slider, Tom Nook, Blathers, Mr. Resetti and more. There are also a number of new characters that have yet to be revealed. One of the biggest additions is that now up to three people can visit your town via the DS’ wireless LAN, or over the Internet by using the upcoming Nintendo Wi-Fi connection. No longer will you have to swap memory cards to check out your friends’ places – it’s all wireless. The touch screen is used primarily for item management, but can also be used to create wallpaper designs, clothe your character, and even lead it around town if the D-pad isn’t your thing.

Animal Crossing is game that lends itself to short gameplay sessions. Sure you can blow hours and hours sprucing up your house and collecting items, but it doesn’t require you keep up with your town on an almost daily basis, which makes the DS the perfect home for the sequel. It’s going to be great to pop open the DS and play for a few minutes while waiting for the bus or even during commercial breaks. The ability to go hang out in friends’ towns over the Internet is a solid addition for those of us that don’t have anyone close by to visit. Animal Crossing DS is currently set for a Q4 2005 release.
