MGS4 Must Sell 1 Million Copies On Launch Day?Posted 2:09pm Thu Nov 29, 2007 by Aaron Dunlap Tags: metal gear solid 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, konami, hideo kojima, ryan payton

In the linked Reuters article, calling Metal Gear Solid 4 the last of the third-party single-platform exclusive games, Kojima Production's Ryan Payton says that the game must sell over a million copies on launch day to recoup the huge cost of development.

So far only two games have even hit the million-sold mark for the PS3. Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, the so-far most anticipated release for the system, has sold under 100,000 copies currently.

There is serious doubt as to whether the game will be the financial boon that Sony needs it to be. Metal Gear has its fans, but the game lacks the widespread appeal of less complicated series such as, say, Ratchet and Clank. Then again, I suppose there are a lot of people who are holding off on a purchase of the last-place console until MGS4 releases, myself included, but are there really a million people ready to pony up $400+ for the sake of one game?

The most commercially obvious thing for Konami to do is release this game on a more popular platform so it might have a chance of making a profit, and the only reason we haven't heard an announcement of such a port is because Sony clearly has some kind of ridiculous exclusivity contract.

And I don't blame Sony for that. If MGS4 rolls off onto the 360 like previously-PS3-exclusive Assassin's Creed did, the PlayStation 3 obituaries will start coming fast. It's in their best interest to lock MGS4 down, but by tying the system's future to a game that newcomers to the franchise won't even understand, they may have signed their own death warrant.

It's possible, but then if the title is as amazing as people expect it to be, the fact that some will be unfamiliar with the characters/story is irrelevent. I'm very interested in seeing what kojima came up with for this one.

You're one of the nerfherders who bought a PS3, though.

Yes but that was the fault of someone who shall not be named. :) I know a lot of 360 owners who might be reeled in if the MGS4 temptation becomes too much.

They intend to include the option to open up the cutscenes from older MGS games to explain specific things in the story that one may not know without having played the previous games.  I'm just wondering when they will start pumping out the comercials for this game.  Probably sometime after new years.  As for me I was willing to pony up 166.66+60 for this game, the other 2/3 of the $500 goes to FFXIII/VS.  Anything else that comes out worth my time is just gravy.

The latest PS3 adverts have included MGS4 footage (from the E3 trailer). I've never seen much mainstream advertising for a MGS game, though. None that was any good.

It's like six seconds worth of footage in the latest commercial, isn't it?

If that.

I've never noticed much either, but if they really want to pull of 1m in a day, they better get at it.  MS dropped 10m on Halo 3 advertising... Most of it was pointless promo crap (That big imax? thing in Britain, live acted high budget commercials, etc.), MGS would probably do well to snag a few TV spots with just game footage.  Best would be to just sponsor a popular show's episode like Assassin's Creed did with South Park.  That was brilliant, I'd much rather watch VG footage than yet another pointless auto-insurance comerical.

I'm being completely honest, I don't even think the 360 could pull off those numbers for MGS4 (as it has the highest attache rate of all current consoles).  Sony was so sure brand loyalty would usher them into the golden age of next-gen gaming.  Way to pull a "Nintendo" morons.  History repeats itself.

I hope that he's referring to world-wide sales. :)
