After an E3 showing filled to the brim with Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, and Donkey Kong, it didn't take too astute an observer to realize that Nintendo has been beating the same drums for a while now. The core characters that make up the Nintendo brand have arguably been over-taxed by the company, used to churn out sequel after sequel after sports spinoff after kart-racing spinoff. This has been a common complaint against Nintendo for years now, and it seems that they may have finally noticed.
As Nintendo Life points out, in a recent dialog with Nintendo investors (translated and originally reported by Andriasang), Shigeru Miyamoto said, in regards to his future plans:
I think that next year I can probably deliver something new. (...) It's been nearly 10 years since I made the Pikmin character, so I feel this is the year where I must at long last make a new character.
When the lack of original characters in the Nintendo lineup is mentioned, a standard rebuttal is usually to point out Pikmin, a wholly original series created first, as Miyamoto says, 10 years ago.
